Post subject:  How To: Replace Front Motor Mount 02 Bonneville

I have a 02 Bonneville with 98k. It started shifting hard after being driven around town.
The more times I shifted through the gears, the rougher the shifts became. :???: I asked
my wife to shift the car into drive while holding down the brake pedal to observe the
engine movement - and holy cow - it moves 2-3 inches. Time for a front motor
mount change! Here's where it is and what it looks like:

Image

Here is what the new one looks like. Initially, the dealer asked $159.99 for it. I asked him
for a better price, and he ended up selling it to me for $129.99.

Image

Here are the tools I used. The socket size was 11/16 for the 3/4 drive, and 15 mm for the 3/8 drive.

Image

Here is how I positioned my jacks to support the motor. I found out the larger jack on wheels
dropped slightly, but the red one held strong. Slight pressure is all that was needed - just
enough to see the car move up about an inch.

Image

Here is a partial disassembly - after disconnecting the hose and electrical to and
removing the cannister from the mount bracket.

Image

Complete removal of bracket and mount - ready for reassembly. Lock tight was used
on the studs, and I double nutted the old mount in place of buying new nuts.

Image

It took just over an hour, including clean up. Test drove the car and - wow - awesome
smooth shifts. Even took it up to Minneapolis and ran it around there from
stop light to stop light, and no further troubles. It's cured. Easy fix. Costs more than
using hockey pucks, which I gave some serious thought to - I was concerned I would
get some annoying vibes so I caved and bought OE replacement.

I'd like to move this to a different forum - is this possible?

First off, welcome!! I see you're from MN, we have quite a few MN members.

Good write-up, I'll be doing the hockey pucks myself soon.

I believe you meant 1/2 in drive? I have a 3/4 inch drive set, and those don't look that big.

Looks like the ratchet is 1/2 and the extension is 3/8

That is what I'm referring to.

It's 1/2 inch drive. I have a Snap - On brand set that has served me well over the years. The rest of my tools are a potpourri of brands, but always seem to get the work done.

Just bought the car 3 weeks ago with 98k for $5900.00. It's a one owner trade from New Jersey. I first opened the trunk to make sure Jimmy Hoffa wasn't in there. Very clean. Bought at auction in Shakopee. It was serviced at a Cadillac dealership in a suburb of New York City, close to the Hudson River (Carfax). It was well maintained - no oil leaks. This was the only serious problem to surface. The minor troubles I have are need to replace a few dash lights (no big deal), and solder in some new led's into the radio display, which I'll try and hope for good results. I want the display to work-- If the radio display fix fails, I'll just purchase aftermarket at some future date. Other than that, the car is fantastic and I love driving it.

Hi,
I'm mrwildroot, a newbie to this forum.
Found you because of a defective motor mount on my 2000 Bonnie SE. (57,000 orig miles).
Thanks to this specific post, I'm clear on what to do next.
Needing a 15mm Deep Socket, and I'll have this problem licked.

My questions would be about getting the studs out of the engine block..why and how???

Off to buy a set of deep metric sockets tomorrow morning.

Curious also about Standard 11/16 nuts on Motor Mount, and Metric (15mm) on the Motor Mount Bracket....
