Dead 1-2 shift solenoid. Didn't feel like driving it across town like that, so I rented a uhaul car dolly and towed it with the truck! Total weight was probably pushing 4500 lbs, which is a fair amount for my little truck! It is rated to tow up to 6000 lbs total though, and I definitely think it could do it. Although at that point, I'd like trailer brakes.

It amuses me to see just how big the Buick is next to the truck. In size and weight, the Buick is definitely bigger.

The 4.3 V6 provides decent acceleration, but has a lot of cojones for towing like this. Didn't ever even break 2000 rpm, even with hills and stuff. Probably about a 10-15 mile tow altogether. Made me happy I invested in a big auxiliary trans cooler for it.

I hope to get my Buick back and shifting right soon!

How were the brakes doing on this trip? I don't think I like the sound of excessive towing like that with the brakes I think the truck would have.

Those brakes are fine. More than capable of handling that in a safe driving manner.

I wouldn't want to haul that car to FL with that truck, though.

Oh yeah John's right, the brakes were more than capable, they aren't wimpy. That and I don't skimp on brake pads/rotors. This particular S10 was optioned from the factory with towing in mind. You can't option out an S10 or Blazer to tow any better than this one can.

But to Florida? Not sure, lol! Across the state, sure, but down to Don's from my place is about a 500 mile trip! The gas mileage would give me nightmares!

That's one tough little truck. Sucks to hear about the Buick though, but you'll have it on the road again in no time I'm sure.

Would it be worse than if you had two people driving the cars individually? :P

Gordy's truck was more than capable.

But Gordy's truck is also more truck than an S10.

Personally, I wouldn't want to tow a car of our magnitude with anything less than a full sized half ton truck, but I suppose you need to do what you need to do with what you have.

Dude, I'm not trying to toot my own horn, but you are seriously underestimating what these little trucks are capable of.

The 4L60E transmission found in my truck is the same as the one found in John's fullsize Avalanche which is at least a 1/2 ton truck. The same transmission is also found in fullsize Silverados, Sierras, Suburbans, and Tahoes. I have the capability to disable overdrive just like the big trucks.

The 4.3 when mated with such a relatively lightweight truck is more than capable of hauling a lot of weight. The engine's whole purpose with regards to tune, and the cam installed is to have a massive amount of low end grunt. As I said earlier, even when taking off from a stop uphill, my engine never felt like it was straining or even got above 2000 rpm.

And, as stated earlier, the brakes are more than capable of handling the load that was applied to it. I've been towing large (18-22') boats for years with it and have never had a single issue with warping, fade, or anything else. Even with this heavier than average load I never had a problem coming to a stop, even downhill.

These trucks are capable from the factory of hauling up to 6000 pounds, and this truck was optioned out to pull every one of those pounds safely if it had to. This load was well within it's capacity.

So what's the problem? You don't always need the biggest baddest thing to get the job done.

There is no problem, I am just sharing my opinion, which is based on zero experience with trucks of any variety, and there capabilities. Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain, of ignorance and inexperience.

No worries, many tend to associate S10s with the garden variety four cylinder basic truck which is best suited for light hauling and runaround duties. It does look a little funny to see one actually doing some serious truck duties, even though they are capable of it, it's not usually an association people make.

and dont forget when things are *rated* the ratings mean you can safely operate at most highway speeds when loaded properly. so the parts are capable of more, you just have to drive slower and think a little further ahead. for long hauls i like the added stability of a heavier pulling vehicle.

I want to say a little about these S10's.... They are torque monster V6's... The shift into Overdrive and hit 1200 Rpms and don't even groan... Most of the later CPI/MPI units produce 185-200 Hp and roughly 260 Ft Lbs very low down... IIRC these trucks were rated to tow 5000-7000 Lbs... The 4.3 Vortec was used in the full size Chevy and GMC Trucks as well.. They had no issues towing weight as this is what the 4.3 was designed to do... Move weight.... as well Dans Truck has a Factory Tow package including gears...

They are built to haul and stop this amount of weight..

Now My van is rated for 2000 Lbs... I am sure it could tow 3000-4000 with 0 issues... After all the the van is really a truck platform using some car parts..

So for this truck to tow 3500 Lbs + the trailer is nothing...

Yup, Don knows what's up, he's driven my truck before, lol.

Well, the curb weight of the car is 3500 pounds, but with gas in the tank and my stuff in the trunk it's probably safe to add another couple hundred to that at least. Those dollies are pretty stout solid steel, with a pivoting apparatus for the center (so the car can turn a bit on the trailer), and built in retractable ramps. I would be very surprised if it didn't weigh in the 800 lb range.

3700 + 800 = 4500. Just an estimate.

That falls in the range of what the S10 truck can tow and stop..

Johns Chevy Truck is rated to tow 10000 Lbs, and has the brakes to back it up along with Hydaboost to put the clamps on...
