To properly enjoy the Rolling Couch, one must be violently thrown into the seatbelts on occasion. To help accomplish this safely, here's what my friend and I did today:

Me impacting the lugs off:

Old, shimmying drilled/slotted rotors and pads:

New EBC Ultimax slotted rotor on left, old drilled/slotted on right. I wonder why the old ones started shimmying...

New front brake hose:

Old brake hose. Starting to rust out around the metal to rubber connections:

Another old brake hose. Corrosion = bad.
Image

New EBC rotors and AutoZone Duralast Cmax ceramic pads. They stop very well.

Me re-connecting the battery so the stick we propped against the gas pedal to keep brake fluid in the master cylinder wouldn't kill the battery.

It took us about 4.5 hours to do all 4 rubber hoses, pads, rotors, and bleed it all out. The biggest pain in the butt were the brackets holding the old hoses on. Fortunately my friend's house had a lot of tools for us to use in persuading the old hoses to part ways with their brackets.

Overall, it was a kinda fun if cold time spent working on the car with great company.

And you didn't even put a coat of black paint on the calipers? Granted no-one will see it but, still...

Does getting them black with caliper grease count?

Too bad nobody can see the rotors. At least they stop very well. And, the mechanics who inspect the car in January will know it's not your typical Buick.

LOL, my friend offered as a joke. I almost took him up on it. To paint the calipers, not find somebody with one mammary.

I still think they need bleeding. The pedal is going to the right height, and is still kinda soft even after stomping on it hard. My friend didn't want to bleed the lines thoroughly, just get enough brake fluid to see if there was any air in the system. Darn it, I need a MityVac 7201. Pump that puppy up, let it bleed a bit, suck a liter of new fluid through the system. That would be nice...

Glad to see another member not skimp on brakes! Those rotors are nice.

However, in battery pic, you said you had a stick on the "gas" pedal? Maybe "brake" instead?

You're right. I said "gas", meant "brake"! Propping the BRAKE pedal down kept the fluid in the MC, making bleeding after go much faster.

After sitting overnight, the pedal got nice and firm. It's stayed that way, so I'm not touching it again.

There are areas to skimp for maintenance. Brakes aren't one of those areas. Spending lots of money doing the brakes right is worth it in situations avoided.

Don, next time I'm down there, I'd gladly help you do brakes on your 95. It was $170 for the rotors, $36 for the hoses, the pads were free on warranty, and about $20 of small stuff like caliper grease, new retaining clips, brake fluid, brake cleaner, shop towels, and gloves.

These rotors and pads seem to be a great match. The Couch will stop quite rapidly. I'm hearing a noise at highway speeds that may be the rotors, but I'm not sure. The snow tires in the picture are noisy also.
