Working on my '97 again... finally.

What I'm looking at first is the extremely loud intake whine noise. It's so loud you can't pinpoint it to anything external. You can hear it loudest directly at the intake with the filter off, and under the oil cap.

My first thought was something in the PCV is messed up. My recollection is that this complete motor came from a wrecked '02. So far I've identified an idle quality issue with the MAS connected, makes me think massive vacuum leak or something like that. Pulled the PCV valve and throttle body thus far, no luck finding anything that looks wrong.

I'll be working on this one tonight, tearing the top end off in hopes of finding something, but anybody have any other ideas?

Well, I found a vacuum leak path at the supercharger plenum gasket. Not sure how the noise was being transferred into the crankcase yet.

Just reading this now, I was gonna surmise a vacuum leak somewhere.

Also check the o-rings on the pcv to make sure they are doing what they are supposed to be doing.

Does the engine react to the oil cap being taken off?

I've been cleaning up parts to re-do the paint with PC, had to take a lot of stuff apart. Aparently the aluminum primer I used when I painted didn't like the cast aluminum, it had started flaking really bad already. Everything else was fine, but I figured while I have everything apart I should fix that.

One other person has confirmed that the most likely culprit at this point is the vacuum leak at the plenum. Not sure what exactly generated the noise, perhaps the plenum gasket itself was 'flapping' or something? Once I finish cleaning and powdercoat everything I'll put it back together and see if that fixes it. Opening the oil cap wasn't enough of a magnitude factor to notice if it helped/hurt the idle. Unplugging the MAS made it idle rock solid, which I figured means step one: Fix the major vacuum leak.

Next up is the transmission. Seems like it's starting out in either 2nd or 3rd (not sure which yet - I keep begging people to bring a tech 2 to the meets!), and reverse works. In my mind that means the computer doesn't like something and is running in some sort of limp home mode. Trans is a fresh rebuild, I would think that if 2nd gear is working and reverse is working that mechanically/hydraulically speaking that means 1st, 2nd, 4th, and rev all work and I can't think of any reason why 3rd wouldn't be working. I really need a scanner to see what transmission codes, if any, are being set that would explain the behavior.

Also working on quieting down the exhaust a bit. It's just too loud as it is lol.
