For those who are interested in this new, non-dino, American-made synthetic 5W-30 oil...

They had a rebate last summer where you could get a 5-quart jug for free (costs $26, rebate was $26). Then they had a rebate a couple months ago for $20 (you ended up paying $6 in the end).

Now they have a $16 rebate -- you'll end up paying only $10. Still a pretty good deal. Buy before Dec 31st. I don't know anyplace to get it other than Walmart.

For those who don't know, this oil is made from animal fats. Good ol' American animals -- not a single bit of it comes from the Middle East. If you've been looking for a way to stick it to OPEC, here is your chance. Is also more "green" than conventional oils, for those who care about such things. It has received decent reviews at BobisTheOilGuy.com so far (a website full of guys who analyze motor oils); it seems good for 5000 miles at least.

Since this is a new rebate offer, you can participate even if you received the earlier rebates.

Anybody here tried it yet? I'll be using my first bottle at my next oil change.

I stuck it into my mom's Subaru and an old 3400 in the family. It's on the thicker end for a 30-weight from what I've heard. The 3400 slapped less on startup, and both engines seemed to idle a little smoother once warmed up. It cost me tax and stamp for the 10 quarts used. I'd run it again.

They've got another rebate going. Same terms as above. As before, but this one is for 5-gal jugs purchased by Jan 31st. Is only available in 5W-30 synthetic, which is great for Bonnevilles. Plenty for your oil change and will leave enough left over for a top-off later.

Here's a link for the rebate form: http://www.getg.com/campaigns/request.php?cID=rat120108

I've been running this in Gypssei since mid-December. She seems to like it -- engine runs quieter. I plan on getting a used oil analysis done at the next oil change (BobisTheOilGuy.com is looking for more analyses on this oil) and will be running it again next time (with Purolator PureOne filter again). Will share the results here too. There is a guy at BITOG who ran some for 10K miles with minimal engine wear. Since this is my first run with this, I'm thinking I'll stop at maybe 8K.

If you're interested in this new all-American oil but don't do your own oil changes, there is also a $10 coupon off a full-service oil change at Wal-Mart using this oil.

Being derived from animal fats, I wonder if it's gonna smell like goat ass, like supercharger oil does.

:stupid:

I'm all for alternatives, but I'll let the rest of the market figure out whether it's really good or not before I try it, lol. I've got all of our vehicles on a diet of either Pennzoil Platinum or NAPA brand Synthetic, all 5W-30.

It's been proven so far.. The stuff you can buy has been used in ALMS this past season, and sponsors one of the main cars. I'd probably run it if BMW didn't have a very specific requirements for Oil in the US because of our gasoline quality.

It's fine for cars that need regular old 5w-30.

I've used it. It smelled like motor oil. Given what modern motor oil is and what it has in it, it's pretty much all going to look/smell the same. Some companies might put a dye in for branding, and that's it.

From what I've seen so far, this oil looks/smells like regular motor oil. The website also says that it can be mixed with other motor oils and recycled along with them after use.

The base oil is made from renewable resources. It's still using a pretty standard additive pack, IIRC. The stuff meets API SM. That's far better oil than what ANY 3800 came from the factory with.

I would love to use it, but haven't seen it. All the newer engines require GF4 or GF5 API motor oil and the newest require Dexos1 or 2 motor oil to meet manufacturers warranty. I think it would work fine in my ole green car. - BC

I think you can only get it at Walmart, and some individual Walmart stores don't carry it. My local Walmart has it on an endcap in the automotive section, away from the other oil brands. Dunno if that's to promote it or whatnot, but if I was not actively looking for it, I could easily have missed it altogether.

This is what the 5-qt jug looks like:

Image

If your Walmart doesn't carry it, you can order some at Walmart.com. They will ship it to your local store and you can pick it up there for no extra charge.

Amazon.com sells 1-qt bottles in a case of 6, but not the 5-qt jugs.
