I have a 2002 Bonneville with the 16" by 7" stock rims. Tire rack says that the tires I need are 225/60-16. I was just wondering if anyone has had experience with tires of this size and knows the best ones to buy. I currently have Kuhmo but I can't recall which ones...

How much are you looking to spend, and what kind of driving conditions will you be seeing? How much snow and ice?

Go with 245/55 R 16 size
They will give you the same OD as a 225/60 R 16 (so no speedo error) but with a bigger contact patch.

You could get away with 255/50 R 16's if you don't mind a little tire rub at full lock under hard cornering.

Just put Kumho KR21's on my sister's Taurus, and they have been good tires so far. If you want a smooth ride, and don't care too much about performance, go with the stock size. If you want some more traction, go 245/55R16.

I don't suggest making such recommendations so soon, guys. The KR21 is a cheap tire, and if budget permits, there are far better choices. A 245 or 255 will have poorer snow performance, should the requirement be there. They are also more expensive.

Let's get a better feel for the situation before saying anything further.

I live in Binghamton, NY so I need something that can handle sometimes up to 6 inches of snow. My price range is probably max about 500. I don't have any problems with the Kuhmo Solus' that I have now, I was just wondering what was better. Tirerack has some nice Michelins, the Hydroedge seemed pretty attractive in all attributes as did the Michelin Primacy Mxv4. I can only go on what's online though because my dad has only bought Kuhmo and a couple other brands.

And sorry about the post duplication, I wasn't 100% sure where to post this question.

Had the MXV4s on the 02SSEi I had and I wasn't happy with them. I have always like Michelin tires until I bought these, lot of money for a tire that just doesn't perform that good and the tread wear didn't compare to other Michelin tires I had in the past which were X-One and Symmety, both of them were great tires. The X-One was my favorite but they no longer make it

I had the Khumo KR21 on my 94SE Bonnie (when I bought these they were 80 each at DTD -Discount Tires Direct) and Pirelli P5 Cintursto's currently on my 95SSE *RIP* and my 99SSEi (These are 100 each at DTD) they are close in price and both are great tires. Good wet, dry and good traction in the snow too plus they both are rated for 80K miles. If you want a more plush ride go with the Khumo's or if you want a more firm ride go wth the Pirelli's.. I am sure you will be happy you did I know I won't hesitate to buy another set of either ;)

There is a key difference between the Primacy MXV4 and the lower-performance Energy MXV4 Plus or Energy MXV4 S8. Which did you have? The Primacy consistently gets good reviews and the Energy is an OEM style tire that is closer towards the basement. Based on your snow requirement, it wouldn't be a good idea to have the wider tires unless you would be willing to swap back and forth between dedicated winter tires for snow and ice driving.

Between the Primacy MXV4 and Hydroedge, it's hard for me to make a recommendation, but the Hydroedge does appear to be slightly cheaper - I currently run a set. It's a good, decently quiet tire that has excellent treadwear ratings and good traction and handling for a daily driven passenger vehicle, especially in the wet. I bought my set used, and although I still have a good amount of tread remaining, I will probably be looking to replace them soon because they are starting to dry-rot from age (oldest tire dates back to 2003). I would also like to stress that the key MXV4 you should look at is the Primacy, and not any variant - no Energy MXV4, and not any MXM4 either. I associate these tires as closer to OEM ones from the factory, which typically mean that prices are high and performance is not so hot.

From other brands, the closest direct competitor to the tires you're looking at are the Goodyear Assurance TripleTred (and again, this SPECIFIC model and not any other Assurance tire), which are a popular choice. The Kumho's that Ed mentioned are also considerably cheaper, and don't seem too shabby either. Also have a look at the Pirelli P4.

I had the Primacy MXV4 imo not worth the money.
The P4 is the older version to the P5 but oddly cost more. http://www.us.pirelli.com/web/catalog/c ... AR-SUV-VAN Out of all the tires I've had it's hard to beat either the Kumho KR21 or the Pirelli P5 in all around performance/wear for the price.

White, the P4 and P5 are two different models with two different missions, not older and newer models.

FWIW, I've had P4's for ~40k miles now. They are excellent tires in any conditions. I've never had them hydroplane, they stick like glue in the wet, and they do pretty fair in snow for an all-season. The only downside is they're noisy. Like others have said, they're also a pretty stiff tire. They don't squirm a whole lot, even with the giant 70-series sidewalls on my car.

When I ordered them from DTD that is what they told me and reading the info from Pirelli's website I got that these were a newer edition to the P4. The test results did show the same on both of them. I think they were about $30 cheaper than the P4's as recall

Mine too were a bit noisy at first but after putting a few miles on them they seemed to quiet down a bit and I don't really notice the noise anymore. I've had them on my 95 for just over a year and I would guess maybe around 10-15K miles and they really show no or no wear . I am very happy with them :)
