Hi All, I am new in here. Yesterday I bought a 1965 Bonneville four door hard top. What I am not sure is if it is a 389 cid or a 421. Have no owners manual or any papers to indicate that. It has a steering-mounted trans lever and a 4 bbl Rochester carb. Could readers let me know its cid and if the engine is big block or a small? I live in southern Africa region and Pontiacs are least known here. Chevys and Fords have dominated this region for the past few decades and now it is the Japanese. I can get help for my Pontiac only here! So please help! Cheers! |

Welcome!!! Is there any visible numbers on the block or heads? If it's greasy, wash it with some degreaser and see if you can find anything. |

It may not even be numbers on the ends of the heads, it might be casting/machining shapes. Google "double hump heads" for instance. |

i had a 65 Catalina and it had a 389. i am pretty sure they are the same engines. you can probably search the 65 bonnevilles out on ebay and see what they list the motor as. |

"J23" means October 2, 1963. Casting Number Identification can be made through a six- or seven-digit number identifying the engine's cubic-inch displacement and production year, such as 9778789 for a 1966 389-ci engine. Quick Visual ID Post-1959 389- and 400-ci engines can be identified by the pyramid-shaped transfer lug at the rear of the block. Early Characteristics The 1959 through 1969 389-ci engines have two motor mount holes on both sides of the block, according to yearone.com. Firebird Adaption By 1970, Pontiac engines possessed three extra motor mount holes for possible installation in the Firebird with specific casting numbers for the 350, 400 and 455, including the Ram Air performance versions. Cylinder Heads Casting numbers and date codes can also be found on most early engine cylinder heads, with the only the last two- or three-digit casting numbers found on post-1965 engines. I grew up with a '66 Bonneville, and it had the 389. I believe a 421 could be special ordered for more performance, and I think they were standard in the Catalina 2+2. IF, I remember correctly. Memory is kind of suspect as I grow older. |
