Hi everyone,

I'm doing a Series 1 L67 swap into my '88 Lesabre T-type, and I am looking for a good/average auxiliary transmission cooler for the 4T60E attached to the engine. I suppose I should first ask, with me also purchasing a new radiator (HD cooling of course, as per stock outfit), should I bother with an aux transmission cooler? I'm not going to be doing very much hard driving, but long trips are possible. The car will only be driven in the summer.

If you all think I would be fine getting one and it would be worth it, what have you all used and what are your recommendations?

I looked at this one. Seems about right for the application I'm going to use it for.

That would be a great cooler for the Trans you are going to use... 150-160F is optimal for these transmissions... anything you can do to keep it under 200F will prolong its life...

Sounds good...I had a feeling that would be a pretty good size and configuration. Does it matter which is in or out? I wouldn't think so but I'm no expert on these things.

I guess the top would be the best place for 'in'...what with gravity and whatnot.

Anyway! Is this as simple as fluid just running in and out or is it controlled/governed somehow?

I think I will leave this one to the guys that use those LPD coolers... I don't think it matters one way or the other, but I let them answer... :beerchug:

It does not matter which one is in or out. The flow is based upon the temp of the fluid. The warmer fluid flows better and routes through the plates. The cold fluid bypasses and flows right across.

I snagged an aux cooler at the junk yard today in nearly perfect condition. It's just every so slightly wider than the one from Summit and takes the same hose connections/fittings. I win!

It was off of a Dodge though :sadeyz: .

Just make sure that you clean that thing out very well. You don't want to contaminate your tranny with a bunch of crap from that cooler.

As a rule, it's not safe to run wrecker coolers. If the original car had a transmission failure, parts of that core may be clogged with debris, reducing flow and sending contaminates into your own transmission, ESPECIALLY if you hook it up to flow reverse of what it was on the donor vehicle.

This is not good practice.

Thanks guys...I will certainly inspect and clean this thing as much as possible. I understand the caution and of course, don't want to ruin my perfectly good 4T60. If something seems suspect, I'll get that new one I was looking at :) .

This cooler should be pretty adequate for my 2000 SSEi correct?
