Post subject:  1999 SSEI blend door actuator

hey guys,,,,i keep hearing about how is possible to change this actuator motor from under the dash on the pass side. I pulled the pass seat, bottom panel, inner glove box(no help due to the bar). I layed and looked under the dash for 30 mins and can barely get my pinky finger up there, let alone my hand. I tried to look at stuff to remove to get closer to it but that seemed fruitless. I`ve seen many guys say it is possible but never any links or direction on how to do so,,,,,,,any help is appreciated......

I feel your pain. but it is possible. I have extra grande hands so I fashioned small wrenches or sockets onto extended socket wrench handle. it was laborious but can be done. you might have to use your imagination to fashion a tool that would fit your circumstances.

I can't even see a path to get to get a tool up there from under the dash.

If I just had a starting point,,,,,where do I attempt to go in? Along the firewall or through the middle???? What else can I remove first? If anything?

there are lots of links in the forum to other experiences. see above link. to find more go to the search function and type AIRMIX ACTUATOR. the search function can get you started as to others experiences. report your experience and maybe others can give more info. I know it sounds impossible but one member changed the unit in 1/2 hour. but to be more realistic, probably more like 4 hours (my time). as stated, I was fabricating makeshift tools to make the job easier.

also try this link.

GMAN,,,,,,, thank you so much for the links again. I was able to get the actuator motor out with the excellent instructions in that link to trialnutz. If I could find him, I would thank him personally. And indeed it was the big white gear that was cracked,(along with 2 or 3 smaller cracks near the hub) throwing off the timing within the motor and faulting the ECC to flash. I`m just perplexed with GM and wonder why a safeguard was not built into the system if this is indeed caused by battery disconnects. Or was it a possible run of defective gears in the processing line? :dontknow: Either way, GM did make it a mother to get to and the dealer remedy is pulling that dash,,,,about 6-8 hours of book time just for the R&R of the dash. That is a huge labor tab for a 60$ AC Delco part. :eek2:

You're welcome.

I'm not sure the battery disconnect actually causes the problem, just exacerbates an existing one.
