Post subject:  Gas Gauge Gone Wild! + Check Engine Light Question.
This is weird. I went this morning to a local shop for a tune up special. The gas gauge wasn't doing anything weird until I pulled out when the gauge read full when there was actually only a 1/4ish tank. It slowly went down to the correct level, But after that it just randomly moved up and down to wherever it went to. Now when I start the car the gauge stays at either empty or full for a few minutes before moving. Now remember it only starting happening after the fuel filter being replaced along with the spark plugs and wires. Is there any possibility that by replacing those items could've caused the gas gauge to go crazy?

On top of that the Temp. Gauge may or may not be acting up aswell. I noticed a little while after the gas gauge was going nuts I saw the Temp. gauge going from 202ish where it normally stays at to 225 then back, and fourth slowly. It might be the fans or thermostat acting up or delayed, but since it started around the same time as the gas gauge it has me puzzled.

Lastly, I had the Cylinder 3 misfire code cleared. If the issue was still occuring would it have immediately retriggered the check engine light? Its been 40ish miles and about 7 startups since it was cleared.

The gas gauge is due to the fuel level sender contacts being worn.
Time to get a replacement (hold up -you have one to swap from the silver car!!!).

As for the code, if you got the plugs, wires, fuel and air filters and installation from a shop for $49.99 as well as them clearing the code, either they owed you a big favor or you got the cheapest replacements they could get their hands on.
I would have personally stuck $80 into AC Delco Iridium plugs, Napa Belden Max wires (requesting 95 SSEi wires since they are 8mm vs 7mm for 96+), got a NAPA Gold air filter, and wix fuel filter.
Reason I say Iridium plugs is because I don't see you getting smaller pulley. Until you raise boost Iridium plugs gapped at the stock .060" will net you the best performance with both power and fuel economy.
I am not the speediest wrench operator, but I could have all this done in under 30 minutes.

That being said, if the CE light is on and you can feel the miss you either have a bad coil, bad plug, bad wire or a wire is shorting out on the o2 sensor, alternator, or is rubbing on something else.

Where is the fuel level sender? And how do I take it off?

Regarding the tuneup. It was used with Autolite copper plugs and wires. I forgot what brand the Fuel filter was, But I don't notice any missing now after the tuneup. Just the fuel level gauge being wonky.

You gotta drop the tank and remove the fuel pump assembly to get access to the fuel level sensor. It's a very common issue.

Oh boy. #-o

Just what gets to me is it didn't happen until I got that tune at the shop done. Seems like when 1 thing is fixed another starts. At least I have spare parts.

Is it any chance a full tank and some fuel line cleaner could get any gunk off that might've fouled it up? The gas was sitting (1/4ish tank) there for a month and a half.

A half or 2/3 tank and some hard cornering and abrupt starts and stops have a better chance of working than a full tank.

A little update.

I put a half tanks worths this morning in while getting my big hot chocolate. The gas gauge seems to be working again. Plus I sent the seller a text and he said that sometimes the gauge goes a little bezerk when it gets low. That did make sense since when it was occuring it was low on gas.

Seems like I'll just keep it pretty full and fix it come spring time.

When you fill, just reset the trip meter. That will tell you how much you have. You know it's time to fill when you get to 350 - 400 miles to be safe.
