I'm having strange problem, 96 Bonneville SE. When slowing down or idling the check gauges comes on, oil pressure gauge drops into red and the dinging starts. When coming to a stop, put car in neutral, and when the dinging starts just tap gas and gauge goes to normal and dinging stops. When put into to gear starts to ding, gauge falls and check gauges comes on again till get over 15-20 kms. Oil pressure gauge at normal position when car running normal speed. Been to mechanic 2x, changed oil pressure sending unit and put thicker oil in, all fluids are in normal range, mechanic at a loss. Any idea's?? would be greatful for any help, or suggestions. :helpsmilie:

Did the mechanic put a mechanical guage on it to verify the low pressure?

Have you had the LIM gaskets or UIM replaced recently for leaking coolant?

You could try the oil volume kit that Intense sells, but by the sounds of it, you've got some worn bearings that let a lot of oil by, losing pressure.

Yes, first two were checked/done, will check out the third thing, have appt monday to take in again. Hopefully won't be too costly, put lots into car already, possibly looking for a newer bonneville.

When I asked about the LIM gaskets and UIM, it's because when they fail, coolant tends to get in the oil. If it is not caught quickly and flushed properly it'll cause extra wear on the bearings and premature lower end failure.

Any chance its a bad MAF sensor. I had an issue similar and thats what solved my problem.

How old is the battery and are the terminals in good condition?

The MAF sensor will have no effect on the oil pressure. Not sure where that comparison is coming from. The only exception MIGHT be if the MAF sensor was causing a low idle condition.

If idle rpm's are in the 700-750 range, it's not a MAF/idle issue.

Do these engines have an oil pressure relief valve? Do they fail like this senario or usually stick closed? Just a thought.

Been through this, sounds like your rod bearings are on their last leg. No WOT and try to keep OP up by keeping rpm's up and you may be able to limp her through for a while. Once you hear this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L0fmTzvL_ic it's time to stop

my issue was the idle was so low, and after doing the MAF swap, the oil pressure came back to normal.

I had this repaired at the GM dealer, while sitting at a red light with the brake on the oil pressure was dropping well down into the red zone.

Sorry to be off topic
