I was driving on the highway, suddenly there was a bang from my front end. And I noticed a burning smell and some smoke. I pulled over and there was some white steam coming out of the engine bay. I pulled over and shut the car immediately. The engine was stilling running fine when I shut it off. I noticed something was leaking, but the leaking stopped after shutting off. I don't think I hit anything, and no major parts or metal particles came off.
Unfortunately, I didn't find out what kind of fluid that was leaking... I couldn't tell if it was coolant or oil. I checked the oil dipstick an hour later and the oil level was still normal. The car was towed to the mechanic's shop. But the shop has a full schedule until Nov.26th... Any ideas? Some told me it was blown freeze plugs, some said it was blown engine and some said it was a bad oil pan. Thoughts?

It's hard to tell, but it looks too watery to be oil. If it is coolant, and it's running down the starter like it seems, a burst freeze plug seems likely. It can happen.
