A seal failed on my '89 Le Sabre a couple of weeks ago, resulting in a cooked transmission. :bdead:
I now have to decide what to do about it, I have three feasible options;
1/ Remove, repair and refit the transmission with a new torque converter. :dontknow:
2/ Swap the transmission from my '86 Olds 88 into it. :dontknow:
3/ Fix the Olds and put it back on the road. :dontknow:

Option #1 will probably cost more than the car is worth, I'm in the UK so I can't go to the local pick'n'pull and get one, rebuilding it properly (and it needs a complete rebuild, it stinks of fried oil) will cost about £1000, $1500 at current exchange rates.

Option #2 is a lot of work, and I'm not sure the transmissions are identical, the Buick runs on 14" wheels, the Olds on 15" ones.

Option #3 means I will have to fix the window motor and sort out an idling problem, not such a big deal, BUT my wife prefers the Buick.

What would you do?.

What would you do in my place, bearing in mind I will have to do the work on my garage floor, I have an engine crane and support beam, but no pit or hoist, I have a limited budget, and I'm rather fond of my wife?. :)

Roger.

Are the two transmissions even interchangeable? I am thinking they switched to a little bit different transmission in 87-88.

I would fix the Olds and return it to service. Then you have time to address the tranny. How do you feel about taking a crack at a rebuild yourself?

The trans are interchangeable, it's the same 440t4 between them just the newer one has more updated internals. The biggest hurdle would be if the connector on the '89 for the TCC is different; might need to use a relay to 'flip' the 3rd gear pressure switch signal to the PCM but I can't remember. The trans swap is what I would do; not knowing your mechanical background.

A trans rebuild will need a lot of patience, a clean workspace, and good organization. Also you'll need a few snap ring pliers, a trans stand (I have an engine stand that I made an adapter for), and some other specialty clutch spring compressors (i made mine from PVC pipe fittings and all-thread). There are lip seals that have to be replaced that have a specific orientation they must be in to function, and they can be impossible to see and you have to work by feel, etc. It gets very tedious at times. It can be done, I've done a few now, but it's not a beginners project. It's not something I would recommend if you can't get or make a trans stand and don't have the time/working space to do it. That being said, rebuilding the trans is what I would do if I was in your shoes knowing that I have the tools and experience to do it.

Option #3 sounds easy at first, but it could also turn into a can of worms. Does putting it back on the road mean it has to pass an inspection? How long has it sat for? It might turn into more than just fixing a window regulator and replacing a sensor; brake and fuel lines may have started to rust if it wasn't parked in a garage, etc. I would only do this if I knew that it was temporary to get the Buick running again.

Gonna fix up the Olds.

It will need to pass an inspection, known as the mot test in the UK. But I won't consider driving any car that couldn't pass this test, it checks safety related and emissions items to a minimal level.
There is nothing really hard to do to get it back on the road, and I can either part out the Buick or fix it at my leisure.
I might even overhaul the transmission myself, I'm only 60, never too late to learn!. :)

The Buick lives!.
I ran the Olds last year, and got s friend who runs a transmission business to guide me through overhauling the Buick transmission. It took over a year doing it this way, but during the Christmas break I put it all back together.
Today I fired it up for the first time since 2014, it goes backwards and forwards, but I need to give it a proper road test tomorrow. The time sitting idle has rusted out the exhaust, so I'll have to fabricate a new one. Going to the local tire and exhaust isn't an option over here.

Congrats on getting the Buick back together and running.
Hope tomorrow's road test goes well.

Could you explain what you mean about going to the local tire and exhaust not being an option? Is it because it's too badly rusted that you couldn't drive it to the shop, a shop doesn't exist near you or that there just isn't these kinds of business's operating in your part of England?

I've got 3 good mechanics shops within 5 miles of my house, and I live in an average sized city, with access to 4 auto parts stores 15 minutes drive north of my home. I'm 50-60 miles north of the capital of my state. I guess I've got it better than I would normally admit ( I usually complain because there isn't an auto parts store here in town...lol )

Plenty of fast fit tire and exhaust places near to me, but they simply won't have an H body exhaust system even listed.
How far would you have to travel to find an exhaust for a 2005 Peugeot 307 wagon?. Three auto parts stores within 3 miles from me will all have one in stock.

I can go to a specialist fabricator maybe an hour away and have one made for a reasonable price. The problem is getting my car there in business hours, I still have to make a living.
