well, i just bought a 1993 ssei

anyways, theres a few things that i need to get worked out:

first, the S/C coupler is bad, rattles like a sumbitch, where can i get the part (locally?) and would it be easy to do in a few hours? how bad is it to run it like this for a little while?

second, rear valve cover gasket, leaks oil on to the manifold, at least i think. could it be anything else? im planning on replacing that tomorrow hopefully along with the coupler.

and last, after it warms up , it starts really hard(i think, it didnt do it when i first started the to test drive it, but has started hard since but has been warm every time) have to pump the gas pedal while turning it over, what could this be? im going to check the fuel pressure tomorrow to see if its the pump (god i hope not) but i would like some other ideas on what it could be, and how to diagnose them.

Thanks a bunch!

you are pulling the SC off the motor to do the coupler.

make sure you replace the fuel o-rings as well. they are probably brittle.

coupler makes no difference.

every bonneville I've had leaks from the valve cover gaskets at least a little. easy as cake on the series 1.

The leak could be the LIM gaskets as well, where the LIM, block, and head meet in the corner. Clean the motor and track it down. LIM gaskets are very likely overdue on that car anyway, and you have to pull the blower for the coupler anyway. And it's a prime opportunity to clean the TB and sensors which may be related to your hot start issues.

HOWEVER, hot re-starts are typically an injector leaking down or the FPR leaking down. Get a fuel pressure gauge on the car and tell us what pressures you have:

1. Key on (no start) for 2 seconds, then off, repeat three times. What's the pressure?
2. At idle.
3. At idle with the vac line off the FPR.
4. How long does it take to bleed down (motor off) from your peak value, down to 10psi lower?
5. After driving, does the vacuum line on the FPR smell like fuel?

The whole mess is a 1-day job for a first-timer with the right tools and some common sense.

You can't get the coupler locally. I generally prefer to get it from www.rollingperformance.com as his shipping is 2-day every time. One bottle of oil, and the anearobic sealer also.

little update, i checked the FPR vacuum hose and it was full of fuel, so i went ahead and replaced that, car starts perfect when warm now.

i bought a fuel pressure tester but havent opened it yet (money is a factor at the moment) so i might return it for now and either buy a super cheap one or just buy this one later when i have a better bankroll.

so far i have valve cover gaskets, LIM gasket, supercharger coupler and gasket either in my possesion or in the mail. i start school on tuesday so the plan is to drive the blazer for now and come back the weekend of the 6th and hopefully be able to put it all together and then drive that back up to school.

There are 10 bolts. One is under the coolant sensor on the back side near the driver. Remove the sensor to get to it. Don't forget the bolts down on the flange at the ends. And one is down in a pocket next to the thermostat.
