Post subject:  Correct key fob?

Both my my '96 cars do not have key fobs.

I tried a key fob from roughly '98 or so, the typical black round style ones, and could not get it to program on either car after having the car in the programming mode with pins 4 and 8.

I then tried an early-mid 90s square style fob from an Oldsmobile and it would not program either. I had brand new batteries in both fobs.

What is the correct fob to have for a 1996 and is there any special steps other than jumping pins 4 and 8 and having it enter the programming mode? I watched how to videos and waited more than 30 seconds every time I held the lock and unlock buttons and seemed like neither remote would respond.

Try googling for the FCC id numbers that will work with 96. I know they switched them up from time to time.

I was on Rock Auto looking up key fobs and for 96 they show the black newer style rounded one like I have now. However it says on there that 96-99 Bonnevilles and a few other models need dealer programming while a few other cars could do the programming yourself such as Aleros.

Am I doing the programming correctly like I described in the original post?

I thought 96-99 could do it at home.

JWikoff is right.
I've done the fob programming on my 98 as described here:
http://www.programyourremote.com/classi ... -6187.aspx

The most important info is listed on the item page
SE Model; REMOTE ENTRY LK CONT(AU0)
Which means that, if your SE doesn't have the Keyless Entry Package, listed as AU0 on the spare tire cover label, then the fobs will not work.
I don't know which year Pontiac began including keyless entry as standard equipment, rather than an option, but I've seen it listed as an option for 1996 SE..

I ran the vin decoder on gm forum and i could not or did not see keyless remote entry on the options list for my car but everything else was correct. So maybe I do not have AU0.

...or just look at the label on the plastic cover for your spare tire.
The RPO code label with all of the equipment codes is found in the trunk on the spare tire cover of Bonnevilles, under the carpet.

As I mentioned my RPO sticker is missing, this is why I asked.

You didn't mention it in this thread. That's why I suggested looking at the sticker.

Oh my bad. I mean, that would have been the obvious place to look. However it shows my car has power locks and Pass Key but nothing about remote entry.

Well that's lame. My car had an aftermarket remote starter at one time but I did not get the remote with the car when I bought it.

I feel like such a peasant with a poverty spec SSEi LOL

The 96 SSEi had keyless as standard equipment, The 96 SE is a tad different.. If the 96 had option group 1SB keyless was an option, if it was option group 1SC or 1SD it was standard.

I should check on my SE and see if I can program it. My RPO code sheet is also missing in that car.

However I have had no luck on getting the SSEi to program and I have tried with several remotes. I'll try the SE today and report back.
