Post subject:  97 bonnie wont stay running please help!!

Hello i just bought a bonneville on valentines day. I used to have a 99 se that was beat up but never had engine probs. The check engine light is on and giving codes p0102 and p0107. Before it died yesterday it was idling rough, i would give it gas and get no response and then it just revs up by itself. Then at a red light it kinda felt like it was getting no gas and then died. I was stranded for a couple hrs before it turned on again. Today it started up with no probs but started to rev up to 2500 rpm then go back to 1000 and died. It starts up but struggles to stay running. I live in chicago and our temps are very cold. Ove been using this car evry day since i drove off the lot and havent had issues til yesterday. Please help. I love the bonnies. And the 3800 is a beast ass engine and my fav.

Try disconnecting the mass airflow sensor and see if it stays running.

Any way to verify fuel pressure with a mechanical guage? When it dies, does it buck and shake, or just die like you turned the key off? When you say it took hours to start back up, does it just long crank and never fire, or will it fire and then die immediately?

When it dies it shakes pretty hard. And the day it left me stranded i kept cranking it every 15-20 min with no success. Then just when i was about to give up i gave it one last try and it turned over in less than a second like nothing was wrong and was able to drive back home and park. On cold start, no problems but as it warms up it revs up and down, shakes and dies. Now it starts but cant stay running

Hmm, a few things to check for so far. I'd definitely test the fuel pressure since it does sound like it's starving for fuel/air with the hunting idle.

Check for vacuum leaks everywhere with some carb/throttle body cleaner.

If fuel pressure is good and there aren't any vacuum leaks, try and clean the MAF sensor, (I know you unplugged it and it still stalled, but when my MAF died the car wouldn't run with it plugged in or not). Also can't hurt while you're in there to clean the Idle Air Control valve, since a sticking IAC can cause a hunting idle/stalling as well.

With it not wanting to start for a long time like that, it could also indicate a bad crank position sensor, but with that I wouldn't think you'd get the hunting/high idle before it dies, it'd just be harder to start when the motor is warmer most of the time.

I appreciate your help but there was actually nothing wrong with the car to begin with. I know that the gas needle is messed up and i dont know if its a faulty wire or sender, but when the car died i assumed it still had gas because i topped it.off 2 weeks earlier. So the car was sitting for a week, i decided to put a gallon in and sure enough she turned on!! Not giving me any more problems, but i read somewhere that if the fuel sender is bad the pump is or will be going soon too.

Again, thanks for your replies

I'm not the one who helped but I wanted to say thanks for posting a follow-up.
It is always good to know what has worked and what didn't when looking through past posts to find a solution to your own car problems.

The sending unit might not be bad--it could be a corroded connection or broken wire somewhere.
In any case, changing the sending unit is often done when replacing the fuel pump because the 2 units are together in the fuel tank.
Typically, it is time-consuming to drop a tank whose bolts have rusted in place over the years, especially when you live where roads get salted in the winter.
FWIW, Amazon (and elsewhere) sells a Delphi fuel pump/sending unit all together, so you can just drop it in in one piece.
Delphi manufactured the original fuel pump IIRC.

If you do the job yourself, be advised that the best fuel tank gasket is the ACDelco one.
The others are just regular O-rings that can slip out of place when installing.
The ACDelco gasket is different and has tabs which keep it in place and make it easier to install.

Fuel sender and pump are two diff animals, but its good to replace both if the pump is orig.
Just sayin.

wow im really late for these posts lol. but yea i do know that the sender and pump are 2 different things, but when i was reading about other people's probs most of them said that if the sender is bad then usually the pump is too and that if you replace one you might as well change both.
