I finally nailed the belt and alternator change (which was surprisingly easy) and now i'm at the water pump. i had the pulley off, belt off, and i had it down to those last two bolts who's heads stick out from the engine mount on the right side. i managed to get them free, but they won't fully come off because they're super long enough to hit the edge of the mount on the way out, thus preventing me from completing the job. my concern is, if i break free those bolts holding the mount to the fender, will it come off easily or do i have to jack the engine a few inches up? my guess is that even with those bolts free the mount will hit the fender before it comes all the way off unless i jack the engine up. is there some simple thing i'm missing or am i correct in assuming the engine needs to be raised a few inches?

The last time I changed a water pump in the series one I removed the motor mount and held the motor up with the jack. Probably not the safest but it worked.

how far up do i have to move it? from looking at it, it would hit the fender before it clears the bolt it uses to mount to the engine, so it would seem i have to actually raise it up a few inches.

No I don't think you have to raise it. You just kinda wanna keep the engine level that way it won't put a lot of stress on the other mounts

That method works, just be sure to use a block of wood to distribute the pressure so you don't dent up the pan.

i was worried about denting it even with wood. it looks mighty thin. i was looking for other places to do the jacking...

I used 2 different sizes of wood between the jack and motor.

I use a 1 inch thick piece of scrap plywood and usually put my jack right in between my oil pan, and trans pan.

Thanks for the advice guys, that made it a lot easier than i planned. the hard part being the issue of decoupling the two-piece mount (tons of WD-40 and raising the engine two more inches just about done it)
