Saturday was a great day for a drive so I took the old girl out for a good run. On the way back home I made a few hard acceleration passes and everything appeared to be working great. At the first stop light back in town, my check gauges audio alarm and alarm light both came on. The oil pressure indicator was showing about 19 psi which was the lowest I've ever seen it. Normally it's between 35 and 55 psi after it's warmed up and depending upon throttle position. I accelerated from the light and the oil pressure climbed back to about 40 and the alarm light went out. Back in the driveway it dropped back to 20 psi but the alarms stayed off. Engine temperature was showing normal. I went out to start the car this morning and after the start-up test, the oil pressure gauge went to zero and stayed at zero. Definitely not good. Oil looks clean on the dipstick and the level is good. Is it safe to assume my oil pump just gave up? It sure looks like the next trip will be via a tow truck, which sucks. |

First verify with a mechanical gauge. |

The oil pumps are pretty solid, really, and work pretty mush like a rotary engine. It would take A LOT of wear to not develop any pressure. While not impossible, it's more likely to be a bad oil pressure sender (hopefully) or bearing wear. |

The oil pressure sender is a $30 part on the back of the engine that you can replace in 15 minutes. I would do that first and see if the gauge shows pressure. If you have no oil pressure you would know it pretty quickly in a bad way if you drive it. If the car has less that 200k miles and was well taken care of, I doubt the pump is bad. |

143k miles and well taken care of. I haven't found the time to look at it yet. It's sitting in a fresh bank of snow as of this morning. |

Pulled the connector for the oil pressure sender and cleaned it with contact cleaner. Reinstalled and started the motor for about 30 sec. The oil pressure is still at zero but it also appears that the valve cover gasket is leaking oil onto the front exhaust manifold. Looks like I'm ordering a valve cover gasket too, along with the oil pressure sender. |

Is the engine making any unusual noises? If it seems to be running ok, its most likely the oil pressure sender. But if you've got any noise coming out of that motor, I would suspect bearings. On our 1994 SSEi, oil pressure started bottoming out at stops. Then start getting light noise, ending up spinning 2 bearings and sending metal through EVERY part of the motor. In the end it was complete junk, not even worth a rebuild. Hopefully its just your sender, though. |

Some good news. I put a new oil pressure sender in today and the oil pressure gauge is showing 40 psi at idle. The bad news is I still have oil burning off on the front exhaust manifold even after replacing the front valve pan cover gasket. If I leave it much more than a minute or two I have major smoke. I think it may be time for a hoist to see what's going one..... oil pressure is a good thing for sure. One problem at a time. |

Mine smoked and stunk for a while. When the gaskets leak it takes a while to get all that nasty old oil burnt off. Maybe try either wiping it down real good with some engine degreaser or power washing it (I hear mixed opinions on this). That should help. Hopefully its not another problem with the engine. |

If the engine is cold, I wouldn't be afraid to hose off the manifold(oily spots) with some carb cleaner and allow it to then evaporate. Might not get all of it, but it should help some. A pressure washer might work, but I personally don't enjoy the chances of water getting into connectors and causing gremlins. |

If pressurized water causes a gremlin, it was there all along. And it's the best way to tell if you have a bad ignition coil! Glad to see it was just a the oil pressure sensor. |

Don't make fun of the gremlins. My CKPS has one when it rains! |

Managed to stop the oil leaking onto the exhaust manifold by replacing the front valve pan cover gasket. The bad news is that she's started knocking and the oil pressure won't stay up unless I keep the rpms up. Looks like the main bearings are done. The super charger is also making a death rattle so I know the end is here. 143,000 miles and she's done! Thanks for the help! |
