Hey all, I am in a tough spot right now. When I try to start my car I can smell gas but it wont start up, it just cranks and back fires. I replaced all plugs and wires(and yes the wires are in the right spot), I even replaced the fuel pressure regulator. My brother and I assume the car was flooded and pulled the fuel pump relay out and tried burning the excess fuel, well that didn't work this time in the past it has. When we put it back in and tried to start it it backfired and I mean it was louder than shooting a rifle. Any help would be awesome.

Are your plug wires put on according to the numbers on the coils? Sometimes thety get replaced and the numbers do not match. Was anything else done to the car and was it running before the plugs and wires were changed?

Also, to clear a flooded condition, all you have to do is hold the accelerator to the floor while cranking the engine. This cuts off the injector pulses. No need to pull the relay.

Here's a picture that shows the correct coil location & cylinder numbering. Since you seem to have spark & fuel some mixed up wires seem likely. Confirm again that the wires are going to the correct cylinders are we'll go from there.

Well my car was running funny then i got a 306 code so I changed all plugs and wires and yes they all are in the right spot on the coil packs. Every time I try to start it at some point there is always a backfire and no i have not done anything to it since I got the code. I dont know why it keeps flooding kind of annoying. And the last backfire shook the house according to my mother.

Disconnect the MAF and try to start it. Hold the accelerator all the way down to the floor for the first couple cycles and then turn the key back off and then try to start with foot off the pedal.

Can you tell if it's backfiring through the exhaust or through the intake?
I'd do a compression check before any more attemps at starting.

I will try the MAF thing, by the way what does the MAF sensor do exactly and how would that effect my car from flooding?
Not to sure but my bro thinks its coming from the exhaust

Well i have an update... I tried starting the car with the MAF unplugged and a bunch of white smoke came out of the engine compartment, i'm pretty sure that it isn't supposed to happen. Any more ideas?

I don't doubt you, but if the car ran before doing the plugs and wires, I think we should start by checking the plug wires according to the picture posted above. From there, pull the plugs and verify they are gapped correctly and not fouled. Check the FPR and make sure ot is seated properly and the vacuum line is connected.

If it ran before, we need to verify the work that was done.

It ran before i got the po306 code then it stopped running. Then i did all the plugs and wires. I did put a new FPR in after the plugs and wires didn't work. BUt today I brought my Ignition module in to get tested and it was bad. Put it in and still no fire. I keep checking if the wires are in the right spot and they are. Not sure what to do or what direction to go in now. ANy other ideas?

Ok, since it quit running after the code. Has it had a coolant loss? Has the UIM been changed or the LIM gaskets? Pull the plugs and see if they are wet. Turn it over with all the plugs removed and see if coolant comes out of the plug holes.

A lot of times when the ICM's are tested, they give false reports. Most of us just get a used one from the jy and keeping it on hand for troubleshooting.

Check what I mentioned and report back.

Yes I have had some coolant loss and when I pulled the plugs to replace them they were a little wet and it may have been coolant.

Drain the coolant and pull the plugs. Turn it over a few times to flush out any coolant in the cylinders. Dry the plugs and put them back in.

Try to start it without coolant. If it runs, you most likely need a new UIM and gaskets for the LIM. Do not run it too long without coolant if it does start.
