Post subject:  97 ssei: sudden no start condition

hi,

swmbo drove the car into the garage one night and the next morning, it wont start, i tried my key, nothing.

in retrospect, the fuel pump wasnt running, (it's one year old).
checked the maxifuse, fuses and relay, all good.

battery was a tad weak and it was replaced.

a couple people said to take the after market "ultra-start remote starter" which i did.
it was not soldered or crimped, just wire twisted around wire.
a big orange wire had several strands broken.

the white vats wires (covered with an orange sheath) had a ~4.68 resistor soldered in place to defeat the vats.
my key was read in a vats machine and was determined to be #11, (4.75 ohms). both keys read ~4.68 ohms with my multimeter
i just wrapped these wires together to see if it would start, but it didnt.
sometime during this process, the fuel pump ran for a few seconds and rather than check the pressure at the rail, i tried to start it, no luck.

the security lite is steady upon entry to the car, (with the door open), and flashes 1/sec after cranking and goes out whan the door is shut.

so the fuel pump is not working. i feel it is due to the security, vats, remote starter, pcm but can not find the cause.

is there a way to force the pump to run by over riding these systems?
any other suggestions before i have it towed to the local chevy dealer?

tia

very frustrated,
peter

I have a bit of info that you may find helpful. On my 1994 SE there is a device that further deters theft. If the car OEM Anti-Theft systems is triggered it will cut off the injectors. There is a chip you can find on Ebay etc that overrevs this system and feeds the CPU/ECM the right code to enable the injectors IIRC. Definetly check your FP. My 94 registers fuel pressure when the key is just turned to run (not start). There is also a Fuel pump relay that is reported to go out and a fuel pump fuse under the passenger dash, on my 94 SE...

---i think on mine, it cuts the signal to the pcm/fp.

----the fp has engaged twice during this process...

My 94 registers fuel pressure when the key is just turned to run (not start).

----yes, to prime the system.

There is also a Fuel pump relay that is reported to go out and

----i swapped that with the fog light reply, both are good

a fuel pump fuse under the passenger dash, on my 94 SE...

----and a maxi fuse in the engine compartment

----the saga continues, i guess i will wait until monday to tow it to the dealer :(

thanks,
peter

Security light shouldn't be on when the door's opened. Something's messed somewhere in the wiring associated with that, or with the remote starter that was removed.

Just to be 100% clear, is the starting turning over the engine?

The fuel pump just runs for 2 seconds when the key is turned to run. Turn the key to run a few times then check for fuel at the rail by pressing in the schrader valve.

Got gas?
