Hi!

From start VERY sorry for my extremely poor english but i cant find some help on polisch or european forums ...

My car is Buick Park Avenue 3.8i 1992

On PARK or NEUTRAL gear when i kick for throttle to 3-4k level and when motor go down on 1.2-1.4k level rpm i hear somthing like crash, metallic boom, pooom on the second side from engine probably.

Motor goes drive without problems so the gearbox on normally driven way - no other dramatically sounds or malfunktions checked. Only when i push the engine on P or N to 3-5k rpm and this go back to idle rpm komms this situation. On the good hot motor ist any time so i say hard metallic kick that kick whole car body.

Any ideas??? Help please!

They way you describe it, it sounds like something mine used to do. If the car is parked up a slope and you do it, does it roll down the slope just a few inches after the pop? I never figured out why mine did it, but I have theories. It might be early signs of a couple weak transmission parts, letting the transmission slip into gear just for a moment at high rpm. When my transmission was rebuilt, I never noticed it again. Or, maybe it's halfway normal. Sometime after 92, a 4k rev limiter was programmed when in park or neutral. Maybe it was to help this specific issue, or maybe just to stop people from free revving too high, I don't know.

I know that doesn't help much, but it does point out that you are not the only one to have had this happen.

When it makes the noise, does it sound like a hammer hitting metal? My '93 does that exact same thing, I took it to a transmission shop and they said that it is a broken sprag and is somewhat common. I have been driving like that all summer now including taking it to the track and just general beating the crap out of it and have had no issues with it at all yet. I just don't rev it up in park or neutral.

My 96 SE has this same exact problem and I have no idea what it is.

Both my '92 SSEi and '94 SSEi had this same problem. I was told the same thing, broken sprag and it was nothing to worry about.

One thing I must say is that it is not really good to rev your car up to 3-5k in park/neutral, nor is it necessary.

I wouldn't take it as normal so much, but more of a somewhat common problem. I also wouldn't necessarily say not to worry about it as something may be broken, but it seems to not be a problem that causes a no move situation in most cases.
