My 2000 SSEi threw a rod last year in March. I bought a spare engine for $600 and took it to an engine shop who found out the block was cracked. It will cost me $1700 to have that engines block sleeved and put back together. I was wondering if there’s another solution I could explore to getting my Bonneville back on the road. There’s a guy parting out 2 Pontiac Grand Prixs, one a 2002 and the other a 2004. He’s selling their engines for $500 each. I don’t believe they’re supercharged. Will using the bottom end from one of these models match up to my Bonneville top end until I can fix my block? I read that there’s a fuel system difference between the supercharged and non supercharged engines. Also my car isn’t a racer. It’s a work car to the city and back with the occasional go between lanes, nothing else really.

if the rod is the only damage- which I doubt - replace the rod since its already torn down
find a used good engine installed is about $1500.

The crank journal is scored where the con rod was in contact. I have a replacement crankshaft and 6 con rods with pistons if need be. I was just wondering if the non supercharged bottom half would bolt up to the supercharged top half as a temporary measure.

i see, since the l67 is a shorter in height engine so I guess no - do the bolts lineup?

I have no idea. The last GM V6 Engine I ever touched was a 95 Grand Prix with the 3.1L. That was pretty bulletproof engine. I figured that maybe if the standard 3.8L and supercharged 3.8L were in the same cars with similar transmissions, maybe the blocks and mounting points for the heads would be the same. At least hopefully. Then I could just use the block from the N/A 3.8L Grand Prix and swap over my SSEi heads, manifold, supercharged, and fuel system. At least until I can do better con rods and pistons after I get the crankshaft replaced and polished.

On a side note, is this the same thing as what some guys on here talk about regarding a ‘Top Swap’?

Heads up is swapped. Okay, maybe someone will chime in on this and can offer more insight. Thank you though!

Rods, pistons, and wrist pins are all different. The L67 ones are heavier). Heads are obviously different, L67 has injectors in the head, L36 doesn't.
Blocks are identical, as are the cranks and cams. Also I believe the harmonic balancer between the two is different as well, will want your L67 balancer.

Basically it's like your doing a top swap on an N/A car....I'd search the clubGP forums, IIRC there were quite a few over there that did that back in the day...probably more info on it there. I think the stroke on N/A motors is different to give 9.5:1 compression vs L67 block having 8.5:1 compression.

Thanks, I will check them out. If I find an L36 in good used condition and running I may pick one up and do the top swap. Getting my L67 ready for the shop.
