I read all the no start issues here and have felt lucky not to have it happen to me until now.

Went to start it to go to work and only cranked..I can hear the fuel pump.

I left the ignition in the "ACC" location for a full day yesterday (forgot about it). Could the battery have enough juice to crank over, yet not fire?

If the car cranks properly, it should start - series 2 3800s start very easily and fire quickly.

if you press the valve on the fuel rail for a fraction of a second, does fuel spray out?

Good question regarding fuel rail. I'll check when I get home tonight. If fuel is OK, would you recommend pulling MAF plug to see if it starts?

If fuel pressure is weak at rail, can I assume pressure regulator failure?

yes, you can try that - but when my maf went, I had long hard starts and she would stall at or near idle.

pushing the pin will only tell you that fuel is reaching the rail - only a gauge will tell you the pressure

yes, take the vacuum line off regulator and see if you see or smell gas - you should not.

Pressure first builds from the pump, then it is raised/regulated by the regulator

have you changed fuel filter? if its clogged, that may starve the rail and overwork the pump

Check for spark too. No spark means bad crank sensor.

Just pulled off the vacuum line from the fuel pressure regulator and it was full of fuel. On my way to AutoZone.

I would change the oil, just to flush out any fuel that has gotten mixed in .
The fuel contamination thins the oil, drastically reducing its lubricating abilities.
In some instances, the vapors in the crankcase ignite and explode, blowing the upper intake into pieces.
