I need some serious help with this one. I am good mechanically, but when it comes to this, I am like   What I am asking is this: What do I use to use to get rid of the rust and how do I keep it from recurring? This car came from where roads are salted during the winter. Any help and input is greatly appreciated. Thank you |

There are rust conversion fluids that you can use to stop the rust. The best bet is to get rid of all the loose rust that you can first, then wash the area. Some of the chemicals want the area to be wet, so it can migrate into crevices, etc. If it's in an area that isn't going to need "paint", there's a great product called POR-15. It's expensive, but you can get a small half pint sample jar and use a foam brush and apply the paint. It's super tough and is designed to work with rust repairs. I used it ( the little jar ) and painted the entire bottom of my 20 gallon metal fuel tank for my boat with a couple of coats. Otherwise, use an epoxy primer and paint it right away ( within 72 hours ). Welle Auto supply carries everything you'd need to abate the rust. Spend the money on good stuff now, it'll last way longer than just buying Krylon spray paint that is supposed to convert rust. You need a tough surface that will keep moisture from attacking it again. |

I'd recommend POR15 as well. As mentioned above, it's amazing how far you can make a bit of that stuff go. |

 I think I might have messed up getting two cans of permatex underbody coating. Not sure on how well that stuff works. Maybe I should take it back as I haven't used it yet. I do have Permatex phosphoric acid gel which I applied to the front control arms. There are some areas by where the subframe attaches that needs attention. Some of the brake lines are being attacked and even fuel lines possibly. It's up under some passing againast the firewall. I'd have to post pictures but as yet don't know how to.

I had to replace the brake and fuel lines on my salt belt Bonnevilles. Didn't want to get stranded or have an accident or fire. There is a copper nickel alloy brake line that is much easier to work with than the steel ones. I preferred to save time, so I bought pre-bent brake lines from SS Tubes on Ebay. Rockauto had the fuel lines. Only regret is that the fuel lines use steel braided rubber hoses at the engine ends. I would have preferred the OE style plastic. Sadly, Dorman doesn't sell metal engine side fittings for the plastic tubing--just the rubber hose type. |

hi, when it comes to rust, the prep work is the most important - remove all loose and visible rust with wire brush for drill and then put your navel jell on, when it dries, you can put the sealer - I leave it bare and retreat with rust inhibitor after every winter and keep it clean. |

I wish I could post a picture or video showing the extent of the rust damage. It IS severe. So much that there's a hole through the lower panel just above the plastic on the passengers side by the rear wheel well. I feel like I want to die because no one can be truthful in selling a car. If anyone knows where I can get this fixed reasonably (I ask because I am a Navy veteran on fixed income) I'd greatly appreciate it. I live near Texarkana Arkansas.

Hold Fast man!!! you should see the gaping hole near the filler door on my 2000 - but I drive with a smile cause I dont have much pride. when people point it out, I tell them I paid extra for the hole....lol you may try filling the hole with expanding foam and bondo on top - you can do this yourself and then you get it painted by a pro. |

You can fix it yourself rather cheaply. When warmer weather gets to my area, it's what I plan to do. This guy runs a body shop and has made some very helpful DIY videos. I think I'd rather get a rolling chassis 2004 SSEi or GTP. Something that has the series iii SC engine. Or maybe I'm just feeling down about the whole thing... or overthinking it. I have a lot of stress going on in my life along with anxiety (mood swings too) and can't deal with the additional stress etc. I just don't want to have it fall apart while I'm driving it. |

I hear you. No one wants their car to disintegrate while driving. For safety's sake,you could always take it to a reliable body shop just to make sure the structural integrity of the car is sound. In all likelihood, it's just the typical issue that develops from a poor design near the gas cap. With all the stress you're feeling, maybe you want to consider meeting up with some vets or others who are dealing with the same types of things. I go to Overton Brooks for counseling. Zoloft helps but I am still beating myself up for this one. I would very much like to know if there's some one out there who can help me find a GTP or an SSEi rolling chassis so I can transplant the engine into it and get rid of the ruster. |

The Permatex sealer you have would do a decent job at preventing rust, but it won't do anything for rust that's already there. For that you need to physically remove it (wire brush/wheel, grinder, cut and weld in new panel if rust is too severe) then prepare and coat it with the proper coating (under coating, paint, etc). Once rust has started, you need to convert or remove it before you can re-coat it. |

As I feared, the brake line has a hole in it. Hope eBay will have new replacement for ALL lines. |
