My brother's car has a leaky oil pan gasket and I've been tasked with fixing it. Ed told me how I need an engine support bar so I picked one up fr Harbor Freight, do I need chains or is it adequate on its own?

Anything else that's smart to do while performing this? Any gasket to avoid or go after?

You might check the tech. bulletin. I replaced my oil pan a few years back on 3800 Lesabre, and GM did away with the o-ring type seal due to leakage issues. All they suggest is sealer no gasket, but then again I believe on the newer oil pan the seal grove is no longer, just a flat surface. Also on that car I got it in without chain lifting the motor, just loosened the motor mount on one side and used a pipe and floor jack.

It should be fine if you have the channel in the pan surface. If you have time, you still might check the tech bulletin or ask the dealer to look it up for you. There should be no sealer originally on that type gasket, but the bulletin may have suggested using a bit since they did have leak issues... on some.
