Wife's 2k2 had a weird smell this morning when she got home. Did a quick check and it kinda smelled like burnt oil maybe, but wasn't sure. Looked a bit closer tonight now that I am home again and I can tell the front valve cover is seeping oil thru it's gasket. Not bad, but enough to see fresh oil below it. Did a quick check of everything else and here is what I found...

Could use new VC gaskets due to oil leakage. Need to top off the power steering. Need an oil change. Need to add coolant. The gaskets above/below the LIM seem to have some seepage as well (minimal), but based on the slight coolant loss over time that I haven't been able to find, those might be worth it as well. SC couple is good, tested with the belt off and there was no play. Slight tick/hum noise when driving, I think it might be loosening valves? I'll want to at least check those when doing the other work. Overall nothing too major.

Anything else I should check while I am in there? I've done this type of work on my old SSEi and my sisters old Alero, so I'm not too worried about that part of it. Just anything else I should look for or do when I have it apart. Not looking to do any real performance upgrades or anything like that at this time. Maybe some cleaning/detailing though to make it look nice and clean again under the hood.

Also, any recommendations for PN's for gasket kits and such? I want to make sure I have everything I will need before I start.

Use only the aluminum gasket kit for the LIM. I just bought all the ones I needed for $100 at ZZP, they are very reasonable for price. Parts are all for L67 from that site to suit your needs.

Your ticking is probably aged or dirty fuel injectors. The rockers are usually pretty solid on these but prone to push rod wear. You can do an inspection if you like, but will need new rocker bolts to do that...as these are TTY bolts, and once you crack them to inspect, should replace them.

Replace the fuel rail o-rings for sure. Thermostat is a given for this type of work, and might be a good idea to do a coolant block off in the LIM to cool down the air inlet while you are at it. This is easy with a tap and a couple pipe plugs, or even many do it with a pair of dimes in the stock o ring slot and some RTV gasket silicone to hold them in place.

If you are bored, the blower will be on your bench. You could always do a bit of porting for a few horses...and with the belt off, it won't hurt to buy a couple Dayton smooth pullies and the one 3" grooved one as insurance. When these go on the road, you are broken down. They are cheap, and worth the investment if never done.

I get a slight ticking noise when under load in second. Only can hear it with windows open. Been that way for as long as I can remember. Don't think you need to worry there.

I second the plug the port idea. I'll be doing that when I get the time. However, if you do this your coolant flow is decreased slightly. It would be a good idea to dremel out a bit of the material behind the endcap on the LIM that is held on by 8MM bolts. This will get cylinders 3 and 4 running happy and cool again.

Some people have gotten away without dremeling but I guess it depends on your luck.

I got my AC DELCO GM Aluminum LIM gaskets off of ebay. The sellers name is autopartstomorrow. I paid $41.13 free shipping. I ordered them while at work one night and the gaskets were at my house the next day. I have a 01 S.E. I am not sure if the LIM gaskets are the same for the S.E. and the SSEI.
Im not sure about posting links here so maybe I'll be safe to say its on ebay and you can search for the listing under: "ACDELCO OE SERVICE 89017816 Intake Manifold Gasket"

This was the cheapest place I found to buy this they sell Dorman and GM UIM's but after some research I bought the APN UIM from a different site. If you buy the APN dont forget to buy the correct fuel injector O-rings. The kit comes with the injector o-rings for 3.8's 99 or 98 back. I made that mistake and installed them on my car and just ripped them off and replaced them today.
Good luck

I have done it a few times and never had any problems. Still running my 2k5 with it this way for 200k.

I have heard that about it before though, so if it is apart, it is a quick job to toss a groove in it. Thanks for the reminder.

Probably not going to do the coolant block-off this time around. Wife's daily driver and I don't want to dremel anything out this time around. We don't put the pedal down into it enough to warrant it for a performance mod yet either.

Do you have any more links/info on the recommended idler pullies?

Working on a parts/supplier list now. I will post it later on once it is done.

Go to your parts store and get the Fel-Pro kit for the S/C gaskets, comes with the S/C gasket, yellow o-rings and the crossover gasket.

What rotors are you having resurfaced? Brake Rotors?

It seems to me like you're spending $100 too much, at least.

FEL-PRO Part # MS95744 $7.63 from Rock Auto, S/C Gasket AND O-Rings

Check RockAuto for everything. And $14 apiece for plugs? They better be solid gold and unobtanium. Copper plugs for $2 apiece is a LOT better deal...

You can all of those and some others in ONE kit with the full kit I linked above. No fuss, ONE box.

True, but the one kit costs more than the sum of the gaskets that I need since the kit has ones I don't need in it.

Going over doing some more pricing options this afternoon.

Don't forget to factor in shipping in your costs when comparing.

Also keep in mind the VC gaskets do not have the grommets for the bolts.
