Transmission Shopping

Post by leatherneck »

Ok guys and gals... I am shopping for a transmission for my '02 Bonneville. Aside from the different gear ratios... (mine has hte 3.05 in it) all the ones I seem to find are for the 2.86, asisde from this I have a few questions....

I am finding 4T65E's for various models other then the Bonneville... Are there any "catastophic" differences in these? I know that when I was engine shopping that I almost went Series III instead of the II but in this case I am looking for something with fairly low miles and age, but the car is 10 years old now.. So do I have to use hte Bonneville trans or can I put one say out of an 06 Monte Carlo or other 4T65E application?

Next question... Can I just reuse my diff out of my transmission or is there more sinister forces working against me to get the proper gear ratio?

I plan to buy this week as I really need to get my car fixed ASAP...

You need a trans that matches your trans tag, whatever that may be. It must come from an 00-02, maybe 03, Park Avenue, LeSabre or Bonne w/ 3.05 gears, for a perfect match. Otherwise I'm not sure what else will work comparatively.

That seems to be the pattern I have been seeing here as of late...

Previous owner of thes car needs to be located and lynched for its treatment.

I have decidede to attempt to swap in a trans out of a 2004. Doing some research I know that there are differences in the way the transmissions talk to the PCM. So I talked our friend John at Intense and have a PCM on the way with the 04 information programmed into the PCM with all else being 02 programming.. and since I had to pay for the custom tune package I took the liberty of having a few other changes made to the engine tune as well. I paid for Saturday delivery so hopefully that shows up today :)

The swap starts later today and hopefully I will get this in today. This is my first trans swap in a FWD car and looks like it is a really fun process.... But at a total cost of less than $800 for everything including the new seals, trans filter, trans cooler, mounts, fluid, the PCM and the Trans itself... Its much better then the $2,600 the trans shop wanted... Providing that all works as planned....

And if it dosen't work well, I saw a G8 for sale yesterday... :)

Ok I have the car on jackstands, the front tires are off... and as I am looking at the way this is installed at some point I am going to have to drop the subframe to get the trans all the way out due to the location on the drivers side and the engine being in the way.

I have my jackstands located on the front part of the subframe, but this looks like I am going to need to relocate these elsewhere, but I am not 100% sure as to where to put them so they do not damage the car.
