After replacing a rear hub and part of the wiring harness two weeks ago, my ABS & Brake lights came on. I had Autozone pull the codes- C1248 & C1262. I did a quick search and actually got two different readings for the codes. One reading was R/R short to battery (C1248). The other was RF inlet valve solenoid malfunction (C1262). The RR hub was just replaced so I like that one but I would appreciate any insights on which reading is correct.

Also, assuming the second is the correct code, is that the very expensive ABS solenoid unit?

Thanks in advance.

Wow....Autozone will pull ABS codes now? That's great! Did they clear the codes? If so, has it come back?

The short answer is that C1262 sets when there is an internal problem in the valve or circuitry for the electronic brake control module (EBCM). (Harofreak00 may have one from one of his parts cars.) Yes, that is the very expensive part of the ABS system. C1248 is set at the same time, and because of 1262 being set.

It does seem strange that this would show up right after work on the right rear. Did that go well, or were there problems that occurred during the work?

I actually had someone do the work for me because of timing so I'm not exactly sure how it went. They did say that the reason for the new harness was that someone had hacked into it.

I actually have a few question on my car. Since mine is an SLE, I believe I get traction control but no Active Braking System. The Active Braking System is only on the SSEi. Is this correct?

I think you're referring to stabilitrak, where it senses slip and yaw and actuates the brakes to try to correct the pitch and direction of the car. That is only on the 00+ SSEi's and GXP's. Your car has Anti-Lock Brakes and traction control. TC will pull timing and/or actuate the brakes to limit excessive wheelspin from the front (drive) tires.

OK - here is the update. I had the shop clear the codes to check to see if this was a fluke. After twenty minutes of driving both the ABS & Brake lights came back on. The shop felt that if they cleared the codes and I took out the car and engages the ABS (were talking loose rocks / grass) that it may clear the hung solenoid. Never got a chance to do that before the lights came back on. So here are my questions:

1) Has anyone tried the slide the car / activate the ABS option and what were the results?

2) I thought I read somewhere that the electronics can be changed out on the the ABS controller without actually bleading the system. Is this an option for me?

3) What is a good source for used ABS controllers? (EBay?). With my car being a SLE, will it be much harder to find?

Thanks in advance.

I would shop ebay for it. I am buying mine from ebay because the one for the 00 SSEI new from GM is $885 in my wonderful part of Ohio. As far as the difficulty on finding one, as long as you have the correct brake options for the car you should be fine. From my understanding after talking to some buddies I met thru my job who work for GM as mechanics these abs modules are junk on these cars. The average price on ebay is roughly 85-175 depending on what features you need.

Steve, talk to harofreak00, i'm sure he has 6 SSEi units.

Check www.car-part.com for your SLE part. If you can't find one near, I can give you the number of my local auto recycler. I bet they'd have one, and I know they ship.

Thanks - I started looking on Ebay and found a BPMV (not sure if it includes a EBCM). Are the solenoids in the BPMV or the EBCM? I can't tell from the prictures I have seen. I know the pump is part of the BPMV.

Thankss

The Solenoids are in the EBCM. NFC what the BPMV is.

Took me a minute to figure out NFC. On the write-up to bleed the antilock brakes the diaghram shows how the antilock brake module actually is two components. The part that the pump is housed and the brake lines connect is the BPMV (Brake Pressure Modulation Valve). That bolts to the part where the wiring harness connects, the EBCM (Electronic Brake Control Module). On the Rock Auto site they are actually listed as two seperate parts (each around $400).

It makes me wonder if taling appart and cleaning the two modules may help.

Ah. I think you have to buy the whole assembly. A wrecker will have it way cheaper than $800.

Order the part on Wednesday from a SC bone yard ($85). My wife said the ABS & Brake lights went out that afternoon and have been off ever since.

I just love Murphy's rules of auto repair.

Good news and bad news.

The good news - the new antilock brake module is installed along with a purge of the brake fluid. The brake feel great and the ABS light is off.

Bad news - My Trac Off light is on. According to my shop the reason is my SLE does not have traction control (no switch) but the ABS module does. So I'm thinking, no big deal, take out the bulb. More bad news, my cruise control is out. I'm pretty sure this is related to the new ABS module seeing a traction control problem and locking out the cruise.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.
