A friends 02 SE tranny quit working all together.

He stopped at the gate on base and waited until the gate went up then tried to move nothing happened. He never took it out of drive at the gate. He has tried, R, D, 1 and 2.

Says his fluid is reddish brown and doesn't smell burnt.
The car has around 90k on it.

What are the possible causes for his problem?

I looked at the car today.

The fluid must be an inch above the full line. Which seems to be the cause of this whole thing...

Is this reversable if we take out some fluid? Or is it pretty much done and need to be rebuilt? I didn't see any metal shavings or anything of that nature. The fluid was a light brown and doesnt smell burnt. I couldn't feel the car shift but the engine RPM's would change ever time I tryed to shift gears.

Anything else I should try before having him take it to a tranny shop?

Not a good sign :-$
If he didn't just change or add fluid, it is probably airation causing level to raise
Most likely a pump or converter issue
You could always try to siphon some out the dipstick tube, but may cause level to be too low
The only other test is to look at the shift lever on the tranny under the master cyclinder and see if it is moving when shifting

While it is not a good idea to overfill a tranny, that will not likely be the cause of his problem. May be time for a rebuild.

Was the fluid foamy? If the fluid is foamy, it indicates a low level and the fluid has a lot of air mixed in it. Let it set awhile and then check the fluid with the engine off.

Fluid is about an 1 inch above full line when the car is off. Thomas gave me some pointers so I will hit those up tomorrow. There is no metal shavings that I saw But I was looking at it in pitch black with headlights.

Engine is supposed to be running when checking the fluid. That's why it was so full.

Even with the engine running it was overfilled. PCS issue possibly. No line pressure But I will check that this weekend.
