Hello Everyone,
There is a strange rattling noise coming from the cat converter area that dissapears after 30-45 seconds of warming the car up. Anyone know what could be causing this?

have you noticed any other adverse effects? after my new one was installed, the little heat shield that protects the 02 sensor was rattling (it must have gotten bent in)
i bent it out, and the rattle disappeared. try knocking on the converter itself and see if it rattles. I can't say why yours would disappear though. My advice would be to let the car cool down, get it up on jack stands, start it up and get under there. see if you can pinpoint it.

Mine has been rattling like that for 2 years. Goes away after warming up a little. Definetly cat converter. Not anoying enough yet to replace! zamjohn

Same exact symptoms that our '03 had when the cat was bad. It would rattle when cold at startup, then go away.

#-o So , I finally got around to taking my bonny to the mechanic to get the Cat replaced , But now it sounds louder! Could it be that they didn't weld the Cat right?

First off, welcome back :)

As far as it being louder, do you hear any leaks under the car, or does it only seem louder from behind the car, like more of a rumble?

A new cat of any type or brand will sound louder and produce more of a growl then a cat that is old and plugged up because of the increase in flow.

If you don't hear any leaks from the side of the car or the bottom, then I would say that your original cat was just getting plugged and is now breathing free from the new one.

OEM or aftermarket cat installed?

I noticed a huge increase in sound when I put my Magnaflow cat on my 95 SSEi.

I don't hear any leaks under the car. It sounds like a deep rumble though. It was an OEM Cat that was installed. So I guess the sound I'm hearing is perfectly normal. :) Thanks Guys!

kanedog, this is perfectly normal. I had my cat replaced this week with a magnaflow (part 94106) and I noticed that it was louder right away but I like to low rumble at lower RPMs, smooths out nicely at higher RPMS.

Please note though, as much as I knew I needed a new cat due to sluggishness, my rattle didn't go away after the cat install. And my rattle would still occur after engine warmup. The muffler shop said is was my flex-pipe/down-pipe's "inner sleeve" that is rattling...not 100% that is correct. They showed me an example where the flange of the inner pipe erodes and rattles.

Anyone buy this? or should I explore the 02 shield angle?

golfyeti, What are they charging for repairing the flex-pipe/down-pipe?

It is not unheard of for the downpipe to do just that.

At that point, you might as well get a larger, higher flow downpipe from ZZP. I'd get at least a 2.5". I'm installing a 3" DP on my car.

What I meant was if he had to replace it. Make sure it's the culprit, obviously, but if it is bad, don't just get a stock section of pipe. Might as well upgrade. It'll probably cost the same amount in the end.

00Beast: agreed, I would definately consider upgrading anything that needs replacing. I plan on running this car for another 180,000 miles and I'm totally addicted to power adders!

Any downside to going with the 3" pipe? ( I am assuming you mean performance headers ).
i.e. Am I going to have to replace a whole list of other exhaust components with that upgrade, new, new cat and piping and mufflers all the way back? If so, worth it still? I thought that I migh have read somewhere here that our factory exhaust is good until you got to fairly crazy horsepower levels.

kanedog; I didn't get a quote on it but I will be seeing my new mechanic guy again this week and will ask.

No, when I say a Downpipe, I'm referring to the part that bolts on to the rear manifold and goes into the cat, like this:
