I am receiving an error code indicating that cylinder 8 is misfiring. I have replaced the spark plugs but am still missing. The next step is the coil pack. I have the early version pack with the white epoxy. Since they are out of production the only way I can buy them is if I get the whole rail of four packs. It is cheaper to get the newer packs with the black epoxy. My question is can I change to the new design without issue? And if I only change the one bank will that cause issues with the other side of the engine still running the old design coils?

hi, you can check the wire also - seats properly and no fraying. swap it with a good one to test.

PLUG,WIRE,COIL,ICM,CPS,PCM is the backward order of ignition.

Have you contacted Andrew (Harofreak) on this board. He may have an individual coil.

As far as mixing and matching, you should be fine. There may be numerous updates with the newer ones, but I think the main one is the spring adjuster where they make contact with the plug that had a revision for better contact.

The newer LD8 N*'s don't have wires. It is a CNP setup with a direct coil over plug.

Another suggestion, swap coils with a working cylinder and see if the misfire transfers with it. That'll tell you whether or not it's the coil.

Are you referring to the pic above that I posted?

If so, that is out of a 2005+ LD8 in a RWD STS. The give away is the TB and the VVT actuators ("cam phasers" in GM speak). :)

I just picked a picture of a newer N* that had the modular coils we reference.
