Post subject:  Taking paint off rear bumper

I have the 1994 and the paint issues that many of those had as well. I'm dealing with the roof paint, but I don't know how to take care of the peeling paint across the plastic rear bumper piece... It's obviously got all those ridges that the Bonnevilles have, and it's plastic as well, so I assume I wouldn't be able to just take a sanding block to it.

Some parts of the bumper have the paint peeled entirely off (but its still a muted black color), but other parts are still covered and flaking. Any advice on removing that peeling paint?

Thanks.

A paint remover is made specifically for plastic body panels. However, I usually just hand sand until I can't hand sand anymore. You have a lot of control and a good feel for the strengths and weaknesses of the piece you're working on. Therefore, they usually turn out a bit better. See what a good 180 grit paper does and go from there. If it is going well, follow up with a high build urethane primer to fill the sanding scratches and finish it off with a smooth 600 grit wetsand.

180 is going to be a bit too aggressive on a plastic bumper. You don't need the scratches in the plastic. Otherwise, I agree. Wet-sand to feather the edges back until you find where the paint still binds.
