Looking for any advice on replacing the factory stereo with aftermarket. I do not have the Monsoon system. Just planning on a decent aftermarket stereo, keep factory mids and highs and adding an amp and subwoofer. Car is for my mother in law and she likes to jam the tunes some. LOL Want to keep costs down to a min, so do I HAVE to buy any special wiring harnesses, or can I just tap into factory, solder some connections and be good to go?? I was on Crutchfield and they stated I would need "Axxess GMOS-05 Factory Integration Adapter". I know I need an antenna adapter and of course face plate adapter. Just wanted to know if there was a way around the Axxess adapter. Just trying to keep install as easy and cost effective as possible. I may replace rear deck speaker's and keep the fronts stock. Thanks for any advice.
Keith

You'll need to buy an adapter because you have a factory ribbon wiring harness. Regardless if you had a standard set of wires, a $10-15 harness is recommended because you never know if you'll replace the radio in the future due to it malfunctioning. Ask me how I know, it is a PITA to wire a radio when you can't take the wires on to a work bench and do it in front of you.

The warning chimes are played through the door speakers. To keep them you need the GMOS-05 for your non amplified system, however it you are fine with losing them you could get the GMOS-07 i believe (not 100% sure but it has the same dock and lock connector). You will also likely have to trim out the back of the dash slot because the average radio has more depth than the stock one. Its not too hard really just use a dremel and go slow and you won't cut the ribbon cable. Also RCA's for the sub will go along the left side under the carpet quite well.

The GMOS-05 keeps the door chimes and OnStar if your car is so equipped. If you can do without these there are cheap dock and lock adaptors that connect the factory harness (it is not a ribbon cable on 2005) to the radio for under $20.

Thanks for the advice guys. Not really too worried about door chimes, so looks like I will be saving a little $$$ on the install. Car is for my mother-in-law anyhow. LOL

You will be cutting plastic with an aftermarket radio. Don't know why Pontiac designed them so shallow.

They weren't thinking about the HU being replaced 15 years down the line.
