So here's my question.

I know pretty much nothing about stereos.

My stock speakers sound fine, but when I get music with more bass in it, I have to keep the volume down to keep from blowing them.

Wondering Can I just upgrade speakers with stock headunit?

Or do I need more amps/watts or whatever from headunit to speakers. (meaning I would need a new headunit) I already have an aftermarket one left I've. But I like the Stock stuff.

So maybe just some upgraded speakers?

I have all Infinity Kappa's in the Bonneville with stock head unit. For me, it works perfectly fine (I know it's not the best, but I'm not messing with aftermarket head unit on that car).

I drove for years with the stock HU on my LeSabre with upgraded speakers, and I loved it. I only went aftermarket on that car because at the time is was my only car, and I wanted to ability to play more music at one time (MP3 CD's). After the upgrade of the HU, I didn't notice too much improvement, except the highs seemed clearer.

Hope this helps you a little.

Kappas should really be on an amp to really appreciate their quality. Running off a factory or even aftermarket hu they won't sound all that great. For your needs I would suggest infinity reference speakers they require less wattage to sound good.

I do have a 700 watt amp (Phoenix gold, i think?) for car speakers.

Don't know if it's "good" or if it'll hook up with stock headunit?

Aftermarket speakers would help your sound but without proper power feeding them, when cranked they won't be a huge improvement over stock. I suggest installing the amp you have, but it will be a custom thing, using a line out converter in order to hook it up. Stock HU will not agree with after market amps.

Aftermarket HU could have RCA preouts. The 1.5 DIN radio can be hard to come by sometimes though.

Ok. I have pretty much zero knowledge or stereo stuff.

Really am not into the big loud booming stereos that rattle the cars and bounce down the road.

But my speakers kind of rattle a little when the bass is adjusted up too much or the volume is up too loud (And I'm not blasting my stereo either).

Now, my grandmas '02 Regal with Monsoon Stereo sounds great!

Just wondering if some new speakers would revive it? Or it wouldn't be worth the bother?

New speakers will definitely help, like I said before I wouldn't get kappas but infinity references should be fine. An aftermarket head unit would produce better sound too but for your needs I suspect the stock one will do fine.

Besides you already know the stock speakers are going out. You can always just replace them and then reassess the sound quality then.

I've been driving the car for the last 3 years the way it is. When too much bass or too loud you get a little noise coming from rear speakers so I just keep the bass and volume down and they sound ok.

Edit: Know anyplace to get cheap speakers?

I don't know much about the 92-99 systems but if 4ohm speakers would work maybe some pioneers would be in order since they are generally more bassy and a little more durable then infinitys

I have Pioneer rear speakers (40W RMS, 260W peak, 4-way) and SSEiMan01 has heard them in person. Aftermarket is miles ahead of stock paper speakers.

My preference, infinity front and pioneer rear, match the RMS to ~40RMS for a stock HU. A good upgrade is the 7-band equalizer HU if you haven't already. I found one in a GP (1996?...) that had dual 50W amplifiers.

Edit: I have been running 2-ohm system (per channel) impedence on that HU with no problems. OEM is 8 front and 12 rear.

One of these:

Or those combos up to par?

Or maybe something else?

Edit: And yes I have the 7-band equalizer already.

Wait, I thought the Bonneville has a 5.25" front speaker?

Try onlinecarstereo.com , $48 for the Pioneers.

I really have no clue haha

I could have sworn I saw 6.5" somewhere but I could be wrong.

EDIT: YUP. You are correct. Did a little research and they indeed are 5.25 in the front doors.

Sonicelectronix is where I buy everything. Great prices and free shipping a lot of the time.

New speakers will revive your system. If you're not satisfied, a new HU would be the next step.

Check Amazon. That's where I got my Infinity Reference's last fall, $60.

I don't know the mounting depth in the 92-99s but if I had to do mine over again (which I intend to) I would order shallow mount door speakers as mine are a touch too deep and they hit the inside skin
