Would there be any benefit to having gmtuners burn me a chip for my car? my engine relates mods are a FWI, L27 top end, some LIM port matching, high flow cat, delco ignition. Theres nothing that really adds muhc power but is there room for optimization? Right now its the stock Vin C tune.

No stock tune is optimized. It's designed for emissions, fuel mileage, and a bunch of other crap. I think any car can benefit from a tune, whether stock or heavily modded. It just becomes a bigger deal when you have more mods.

Tricky one, you might benefit from a 92-94 L27 BIN file, but I'm not sure how your bottom end differs.

I have no idea what any of my values are. I dont have the means to scan it. I would love to get the equipment to scan and tune it myself but if i had that kind of money Ide just leave it alone and throw in a cam or rockers :P I didnt think there was any real difference in the bottom end. The L27 uses a PCM doesnt it? Are the .BIN files compatible?

You use the same PCM that the 92/93 Bonnevilles use. What differs is your MEMCAL chip. However, you can't just swap chips. The engine tables aren't the only things stored on the chip....trans tables too. Your early model SSE has the 3.33 gear ratio, something the '92 and later models just don't have. The guy to talk to is Curt...he has much experience burning these chips, and he probably has a few pointers he could share.

Within the same ECM family and motor the BIN files are compatible. For example, your 1990 SSE uses a type 1228253 ECM (look at the paper tag on the ecm's aluminum casing..that is GM's part number.) My 1990 LE uses the same ECM and has the same vin C motor. So the ASSK eprom from my ECM will plug into yours and run your car.

The first problem when dealing with changing the programming is figuring out what is wrong that needs fixed. Before you can communicate with Ryan at GM Tuners or anyone else, you have to see where the ECM's programming is wrong. To do that, you will need some type of scan tool that will show you real-time data from the sensors. Data logging is helpfull, but paper and pencil works ok too. You have to identify what is wrong and by how much. Then you can tell someone with the ability to change the eprom to try and resolve your problem.

Really, the tuning tools needed for this car are about $300 to $500 depending on how sophisticated you need to get. Fortunately, the tools work on more than one car, so it's not really money wasted. But you have to become good at reading your car's health from the scan tools in order to make any kind of sensible change.

The good news is that the ECM used in the 1990 is fairly straightforward. There are simpler ones used on TBI and MPFI cars in the 80's, but there are also far more complicated ones used just prior to switchover to OBD-II. Once you learn what the values mean, you can make sensible changes.

Places to go: Download a demo copy of TunerCat. As a demo, it will work with the simplest ECM out there..the one used by GM on the TBI cars. But you can get a feel for what goes on inside the software and how the values are arranged.

The DIY-EFI group is also a very good place to hang out. While they have evolved into the Mega-Squirt and other home-brew replacement ECMs, there's still plenty of information on how the GM family of ECM's work.
