Post subject:  A digital fuel level to replace a sending unit

I have a 2000 LS Chevy Silverado and my fuel sendingbunit went out, 139k miles on it and was wondering if anyone has had experience with ultregauge or cargauge2 to see if the digital gauges still work right even if the sending unit is broken. Reason being is it might be 500$ to fix it or I can purchase a digital one for less than 130$

If the level sending unit is bad, no kind of gauge will show the fuel level.

Apparently instead of dropping the tank on those, you can remove the bed and get access to the sending unit.

Correct, but he's trying to diagnose if the sending unit is bad or the gauge in the dash is bad. Any decent scanner will tell you that information, and is a good item to have on hand. You can even just get one of the bluetooth units from ebay and use your smartphone with the proper app. I know TorquePro on Android is $5 and works well, not sure about iPhones. The dongles range in price, I got one a few years back for like $15. They're just cheap chinese units.

I have an ultragauge. It'll show fuel level.

I was just gonna say, replace the sending unit. No gauge will matter if that's not working.

You can remove the bed, but that is a two person job at least and a lot of removal/disconnection of other things . It's still easier to just drop the tank using a jack with a transmission attachment or if you have a lift, a trans support. Fuel pumps and sending units on GMT400's are common, GMT800's not quite as common, but still common. It's a pretty straightforward process.
