I had a 125 Bultaco Pursang years (actually decades) ago that was like that. It hit somewhere around 6-7 grand, I'm guessing, and pulled up through 11 grand. It ran OK below 6k, but I could definitely feel when it came on the pipe, no mistaking.

I decided to tear the bike down this past week for some winter updates. For power, I'll be doing a RD350 top end with a couple might as wells. For aesthetics, I finished detabbing the frame and I'll be sending it out for powdercoat along with the seat hinges, triples, rear swing, and the original DS7 covers that came on the bike.

I'm keeping the weathered yellow tank and headlight bucket/brackets as-is and I think it'll be cool to have the year/bike correct engine covers. Outside of the block stamping, the only way someone will know it's a 350 (or a later RD engine for that matter) will be by the 4 bolt carb manifolds.

You'll probably like this too..

I decided to crack the cases to do the crank seals. Unfortunately this is the only way to do them on RDs.. When I did I found out that 3 out of 4 of my crank bearings are howling.. Looks like this thing is getting a rebuilt crank too.

The might as well train has left the station.

Interesting how that one comes apart. The 2 stokes I've dealt with are all single cylinder and the cases split left & right, not top & bottom. Not surprised the crank bearings are a little toasty. Seems like if a bike sits for a while (couple years or so) the crank bearings tend to suffer. I blame it on condensation in the cases which causes corrosion on the bearings. One you get a smidgeon of that starting, they're done. I've pulled one apart that sat only one winter without running and the crank bearings were completely wasted. I think the owner either swamped it in a creek before parking it or left it where water got into the crankcase somehow. It was impressive.

Yeah, all of the enduros I've seen apart are like that. To be honest I would rather it be this way. Well.. maybe if the crank seals came out without cracking the case.

Heads, cylinders and crank all went down to well known RD builder, Chuck 'Supertune' Quenzler, and he cool enough to forward pics of the crank rebuild/true. Enjoy!

Shortly after I got the cases together and a few more bits in I got a call from Bonehead Performance that my powdercoated parts were ready.

The steering lock on the frame was removed/reinstalled and plan for the DS7 covers is to sand/polish the raised lines before they go on.

I'll be a bit busy for a while but I can't wait to get this thing back together.

Which rod bearings did he go with? The Polaris ones look too wide...would they actually fit?

It's funny (now, to me) that he uses Polaris bearings, as I just started working the Parts Counter at a local Powersports dealership that sells Yamaha, Polaris and BRP machines (including Indian, Slingshot, Star, Yamaha M/C, etc). So, if you ever need OEM parts, I can try and find stuff for you, either from Yamaha or using the Dealer locator, lol.

It's pretty amazing how many parts are interchangeable across brands. The hard part is knowing what they are and most shops don't have the time to look into these things. Certainly not for someone just walking in..."You guys got anything like this?". Mechanics and parts guys can work together and after years of experience discover those items, but most people will never know what will work - and maybe better than OEM.

Ain't that the truth. My coworker/kinda boss has been doing this for nearly 20 years, and the amount of stuff he knows is ridiculous.

Here's some pics from Chuck at Team Scream's update port, head cut/cc, and squish check.

At the bottom there's some pics from me sanding and polishing the raised lines on the DS7 covers. I used a mini belt sander with 240 grit then hand handed from 220 to 1500 before taking it to a buffing wheel.
