To me the article makes no sense.

Yeah I guess the LS3 is old enough to come close but the fact is, BMW had a (better looking) 4 door, n/a V8, rwd, manual equipped sedan 17 years ago.

They flat out state, and they're not the first one where I've read this, that BMW has lost that "feeling". Yes, the new ones are fast. Yes, the new ones can put up empirical data superior to the SS. But in that situation, we just answer with the Thor's hammer in the CTS-V and the argument quickly ends.

The point was, that the E39 M5 was the perfect balance of everything... Performance, handling, luxury, styling, etc, etc, And since then, nothing BMW has produced has emulated all those qualities in one vehicle. This SS comes as close to doing that as possible (maybe a little short on the luxury and brand cache), but otherwise it's all there.

Love both cars, but the E39 takes the cake for me. It is simply a stunning vehicle in all respects which seems to only have gotten better with age.

However, I would take an SS over practically anything BMW has to offer today. All the cars feel bloated, heavy, and have lost the brand's historic focus on making you feel great about the car you're driving. Today, they seem like playboy luxury rockets. It's not about how you feel driving the vehicle anymore, it's about making money for the brand, and making the owner feel cool when others see him in the car.

Especially a performance one with an enormous aftermarket like the LS3 enjoys.

One of those SS's that was at Pontiac with us Saturday basically has an LSA conversion. It was said to be putting 700 - 800 down at the wheels and the owner spent $10k to do it. There was a G8 there (one of the ignition orange ones), with a Whipple on it, doing about the same...

Spending $10k at Dinan will get you a nice sticker to put on your rear window.

Well maybe some people care about more than just going fast in a straight line. The idea with BMW M products (in the past anyways) has always been balance and driving feel.

To each their own, and obviously people might be trying to accomplish different things. But I don't know of many people purchasing BMWs who are going for huge power numbers at the wheels.

There's no denying the perks of the LSx platform, and I love them to death, but there are other things out there too.
