I don't use heat very often unless it's pretty cold, and it was pretty cold the other morning and I made a discovery. The heat on this car only comes out of the defrost and floor no matter what the knob is set to. I know that some of these older cars use a vacuum device to control this, and there are hoses on the back of the HVAC control switch. It's not too big of a deal but I would like it to work correctly. How should I go about this? I know that the one local junkyard has two of these Grand Prixs that I can harvest the parts from.

Unless this is some common problem that has a well documented walk-through to troubleshoot... I would first try to isolate which vac servo flips between defrost and heater, most likely it's either leaking or the linkage is broken, not the vac controller. I had a similar issue with my '86 where the blend door was stuck on 50/50, the servo leaked enough vacuum that it couldn't move the blend door without assistance.
