Kinda random, but the key in ignition/lights left on/seatbelt unfastened (all sounds the same) beeper thing in my 96 S10 is really annoying. If you want to hear it, here it is...

Image

Imagine having to listen to that constantly while working on the inside (I have to turn the key to 1 and drop it into first to remove the dash panel, seems like I'm back there a lot). It gets really old.

Anyone have any idea where that buzzer thing is inside my dash and if it's possible to replace it with one from another GM vehicle? I like the one in my LeSabre but I may use a different one depending. The one in my LeSabre and the late 90s Pontiac ones (all the Pontiac ones were the same, I think) aren't annoying to me. I might go with a Pontiac or Olds dinger just to make it different from my Buick.

This is all part of my summer plans to really do up my truck nice. I am getting a new head unit and six new speakers because my stock one is borked. Shame because the wood trim on it looks really nice. It's still on the vents and A/C controls though. Also getting leather seats at some point.

The Chime box on my Transport sounds different than even a bonneville...LOL

But yeah I agree that solid Flat lined sound isn't so friendly

Oh yeah Don, it's awful...

Looks like I might be getting a Lumina door chime. I found my squawk box so nevermind the first question. All the other GM chimes, despite having the same number of pins, also have this weird pigtail coming out that is not present on my Chevy's box. The Lumina's:

doesn't, in fact other than the color it looks exactly like my Chevy's box. Same number of pins and everything. I'm hoping it's just a direct swap, if not I should be able to wire up something if I can find a diagram. Youtube videos show the chime to be pleasant and non-intrusive. At least I won't want to stab the thing like with the current one.

Here's a video of what the Lumina's sounds like, if anyone particularly wants to know.

I went ahead and bought it, so hopefully this will work as is. If nothing else maybe I can at least play with it and get it to work some other way. I can't imagine the pin wiring being that much different, if at all. Keeping things similar and simple is best.

If you want to shut 'er up, can you flip the door latch down on the S10? You can do so on the Bonnies... just remember to pull the inside door handle before closing the door or it'll just bounce back open

Actually Repin, I found that duct tape on the door switch worked pretty good. D:

As is having the box ripped out, now there are no squawks...ever!

Unfortunately I would like to still have the chime/warning function, just with a less annoying sound.

Good news though, I pulled apart my truck's squawk box and found every single pin was labeled with what it corresponded to on the circuit board. Fantastic! This means if my Lumina squawk box doesn't work as is I can simply pull it apart and find what goes where, instead of having to scrounge for some very unlikely to find wiring diagrams.

Some of these are a little confusing though, so I hope that the Lumina's is labeled the same. HL, Key, IGN, and GND I get. SB SW might be the seatbelt, but there is also SB LMP. And B+, I have no idea what that is. Except possibly power?

For only making one long, loud, continuous squawk no matter what the cause, this thing sure does have a complicated looking circuit board.

Anyway, I'll continue to add updates and progress, and a video later once my unusual mod is complete. For now the truck is buttoned back up minus the squawk box.

SB LMP is probably the dash light to remind you to buckle up.

B(attery)+ is probably power/12V, probe 'er and find out :)

Ah yeah, good point. I hadn't thought of the seatbelt lamp going through the box. I tried to follow and connect the circuit pathways on the board but got lost after a few resistors. I bet that's what it is though. That would explain some of the extra crap on the board.

Hopefully the Lumina's box won't significantly affect the operation of the light...shouldn't...but it doesn't matter anyway because I never forget to buckle up.

Tester light powered up when connecting B+ and GND on the...thing...that the box connected to inside the dash (I've got it pulled down to where it's a little easier to reach now) so I guess that answers that as well. Awesome.

Well guys, it came today. When I first got it I opened it up. Unlike my S10's bork box though, it didn't have the pinouts labeled. So I pretty much had to just stick it in there and hope it worked. Which I did, and, it did as well. I'm pretty happy. No more never ending squawk.

Here's what it sounds like now:

Much better. :) All works exactly as it should. I don't know why they didn't just put this one in here to begin with. Seems like all the trucks/vans/suvs of this time period had a never ending squawk box like mine did though.

I'm thinking about posting this over on the S10 forums. I can't be the only one who was annoyed by that thing.

i don't mind the standard chime, but my truck is older it has the little bit of slack in it that lets you pull the key out just enough to stop the chime, it works in acc or even run
