Oh man! I just spent over an hour composing a nice post on disc brake maintenance and then lost it all because the site logged me out and did not retain what I sent when re-logging in. f@#arghhhh! I'm not going to recompose the post. Please change the login timeout to a few hours or a day or something.

I've found a setting that may have affected your posting based on that time length. I have greatly extended it so hopefully you won't have any problems in the future.

Any time you're working on a long and detailed post, there's two things to keep in mind:

1. Compose it in another application, then copy/paste.
2. Most people won't read a long and detailed post. Keep it short and simple.

If you hit automatically log on, then you can be logged in indefinitely.

QFT.

Use a browser/change settings so your browswer will save your work as well.

What just happened: I logged on and came to this topic and tried to reply, and zappo! I was offered the login screen! Less than 30 secs went by from the login to the attempt to quote. I'm using IE 8 RC1 so maybe it's on my end. I'll upgrade to IE 8 Release and let you know how it goes. (Though if the timeout was set for less than an hour, it was taking me longer to do that the other day).

OK, after the update to IE 8 Release version, this is working. I'll let you know if I have anymore problems. (I will be composing posts in notepad though before I put them up here until I have confidence in the site and the browser). Thx.

Have you had problems with this site?

Yes, I will be doing (1) until my confidence in the site and my setup is re-established.

On (2): it wasn't really that long, 4 paragraphs with headings on the paragraphs. I was going to put up some of my best-practice techniques and info that would help non-pro mechanics. Such info doesn't show up in any manual. (But since then, I've gotten better ideas for this site that I will offer up in another post. Track my posts if you wanna know.)

Uh oh. I did that AND updated IE 8 RC1 at the same time. If the site works for me now, I'll never know if the site has issues or if I had them. (The admins should be able to find the problem though now given all the above info, if there is a problem). You just may have made the webmaster's troubleshooting task much easier.

1. What is 'QFT.'?
2. I wasn't aware of any browser setting that "saves work".

It's not a posting problem. It's a failure of the medium. The state of the art of such information is wiki (but wiki cannot be successful if there are politics).

I avoided "the other thing". Been there done that. YMMV (probably dependent on your affluencial ability).

I get it now. It's inconsistent with newsgroup posting which is what I'm used to using rather than web-based threaded discussion.
