Re: Brake Pads
X2 Ceramics are soooo much nicer in keeping your wheels clean. I never had a car that dusts them so bad as the GXP with OEM pads.

Re: air bags... not for lowering
Thats a good company and I see they now make airstruts for some Bonne's too. But not the GXP. 3 years ago when I did mine there wasnt that many models to choose from. That price is standard pretty much across the board. Tire clearance should not be an issue with a premade kit. But as I said before ...

Re: air bags... not for lowering
Air bags , on the rear aren't that difficult. Remove the rear spring, the airbag has one bolt on the bottom. Slip it through the hole in the suspension arm and fix in place with two large washers and a locking nut. It has two bolts on top which you drill holes in the upper bracket to receive. Take ...

Bolts that hold the GXP spoiler on have been an issue as well with some missing the seal washer.

Re: 4.0 N* Coolant level sensor?
The coolant sensor is a cranky buggy one. I have been seeing alot of newer NorthStar engines now having the coolant crossover gaskets fail. In most cases you see little or no coolant under the car. It first appears as a noticeable antifreeze smell and very gradual coolant loss.

Re: Car Won't Crank
Well...I unplugged my cigarette lighter cell phone charger and I have not experienced the problem since. Must be a short in the charger or in that circuit. Or maybe it's a coincidence and it will happen again tomorrow morning!
Now that you mention that,....That circuit is funny. I used the power ...

Re: Wheel Bearing?
If the compressors running all the time, it certainly isn't broke??? Your rear would be high and the front low. If it is still running continuously, I would be looking to see if the leveling rod came off,(behind the drivers rear tire, on left side) or the leveling switch has gone bad. (I recall one ...

Re: v8 northstar
Yep, the electronics involved/tied to the Northstar is immense. I like mine alot, but they are a disposable engine. Most run great for 100k and then start falling apart. Not an engine I would pick up "used" to replace something.

Re: drilled thermostat and more sealant details please
I just dont see how when an engine develops water pressure from block heat how a small amount of air could keep that pressurized water away from the pellet long enough to cause damage. But I am not in any way knowledgeable in 3800's. Had a few and did regular maintenance. In search engines I can ...

Re: drilled thermostat and more sealant details please
Dan and I were talking about this. I believe the prime reason for factory drilling was to stabilize pressure if I remember reading at the time right.

Re: Clicking noise.
Glad to hear the noise is gone and you got the car back. I have the OEM rims back on mine and when the wife drives and goes to park, I get spastic about staying away from the curbs. I now have that slight ticking in the back others have mentioned, and it to can can only be heard rom the back seat/or ...

Re: Northstar Help
Ya, I did a writeup about it long ago in another Forum, and cant remember the year, but it was well after '97. "Squeeze cast" technology also hardened the block so the tapped holes are stronger, but that wasnt that long ago either.

Re: Northstar Help
Yes, and the headbolts really haven't been an issue since, other than you dont want to severely overheat any all aluminum engine. But the tales live on  115,000 miles is a bit to a older northstar regardless. They are not a 3800. And the retail price of a 97 Caddy should reflect that. Any ...

Re: Clicking noise.
Although the IM could and will go again ( by all accounts so far). It is something that can and usually be heard better at a dead stop or barely moving. And not more prominent when braking. Several GXP owners have had front wheel bearing issue's, I wonder if yours are getting worn. It would seem ...

I've noticed the same thing (or similar) and set the temp, vents, and fans manually and bypass "auto". The car seems to want to keep the car exactly at the set temp and the heat and AC cycle back and forth on auto.

Re: Tire Pressure Monitor Question(s)
The GXP doesn't use either. It relies on the wheel speed sensors to tell the computer how fast the wheels are turning. A tire going flat will spin just a little more than the full ones and set off the DIC low pressure alarm.. Many members including me have went to aftermarket wheels without a ...

Re: Help me buy a car
Northstars are a quality, tight, reliable engine, But,.... They dont enjoy the reputation of making it to the 200K mark and beyond like the 3800. As they age and problems arise you will find repairs complicated and expensive. And if the problem is with the lower end or heads, the engine is done. I ...
