Year and Trim: 1998 Pontiac Bonneville SSEi
Hello Board!

I would like some help in changing the rear valve cover gasket on my 1998 supercharged Bonneville.

Everything I can find demonstrates the procedure, but on the non supercharged trim. I've let it leak for too long, I believe it's affecting my power brakes and my ac and heater.

The brakes work but let out a hissing sound, and require much more force than should be necessary. The ac/heater hasn't worked in a long time.

I've really forged a connection with this car because I believe it's got so much more life in it. I've dealt with bad depression that has sapped my motivation to do this job. But I'm feeling better than ever and have a new job to commute to that will be life changing.

I regret not changing the rear gasket, but it's always looked impossible! There's just too many things in the way. I'm not the best mechanic in the world, but I do change my own oil and can replace basic parts. I've done the alternator and radiator myself.

Again, its the 3800 Series II with the supercharger. (SSEi)

If anyone can give me any pointers, I will include you on my prayers forever!

I posted some pics to give an idea of what I'm up against.

God Bless!

The only symptom of a leaking valve cover gasket would be smelling oil as burns on the exhaust manifold. It is NOT causing your issues with brakes or AC, 100%.

It is not a difficult job and its really not that different being supercharged. You DO have to remove everything in your way. All the brackets, EVAP stuff, alternator, tensioner bracket, etc... This does mean you're opening up the cooling system, so it will need to be drained or leak everywhere. Replace the coolant elbows with the metal version, Dorman 47065HP.

The book time for this job is:
2.0 hours for VIN K Normally Aspirated
2.3 hours for VIN 1 Supercharger

Thank you for the straight up answer. My dad might help me out, he seems to be worried about the fuel lines the most. I'm most worried about things not fitting back together.

You will need a special tool for the fuel line disconnect: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B093ZTFGRK

If you're unsure, take pictures of every step along the way. Label all your bolts/fasteners.
