Year and Trim: 1995 SE. 2000SLE. 2003SSEI

I am told be a trusted mechanic my rack and pinion in our 2000 SLE is bad. This was an aftermarket rebuild of an all edged oem rack... it lasted about 4 years. Question is if aftermarket racks don’t last very long what is the best options?... I got three estimates for replacement and all were 1400.-1500 with aftermarket rack.
