This is a revist of the issue with the my girlfriend's car. Finally got my scan tool to link (plug is worn on vehicle) and got "P0102 MAF circuit low" and "P0171 Fuel trim lean bank 1".
My guess is one is causing the other (bad MAF causing lean condition)? Have no idea if the O2 sensor (s) has been changed.

Start by unplugging the Maf
and see if it improves

Ok. Will do. It's weird that it will run fine on one start cycle, and then will run like crap the next.
I'm thing it might be something as simple as a fuel filter. It also tends to do it more on a light fuel load (3/8 thank or less). Runs better with 1/2 to 3/4 tank and premium helps (I'm guessing because of the lean condition).

FIXED!
Unplugged the MAF as suggested and the sputtering and stalling stopped. Idle was a little rough.
Avoided the $20 eBay sensors and got a Hitachi MAF from Amazon for $72 ($150 in AutoZone). Took me five minutes to change it. Car runs so smooth now you can't tell it's running.

I'll have to hook up my scan tool. The CEL was on from the bad sensor and was obviously still on from the unplugged sensor.
The fuel mileage was down to about 9.8 MPG (city) plugged in or unplugged.
The CEL went out within a few miles before I got a chance to reset it. Fuel economy has nearly DOUBLED to 17 MPG city driving.
