So I have a question about my Grand Prix GXP. and wasn't sure where to place this. Sorry.
I thought I would use the engine block heater since the windchill is past 0 °F. .... Yesterday the car started right up and since it sits outside I clear the ice off it while running. The temperature on the gauge reads normal after it ran for several minutes. So I took the car on a short drive and I get the message on the DIC. " A/C off engine protection " I look at the gauge and it's zero. Not working? I get the car home, and check the coolant level all is fine, no leaks. Also noticed that the engine cranks several seconds to start, The length of the trip was only about 2 miles under 25 mph. I replaced the spark plugs and wires in August. And it's had a coolant flush and new thermostat in November. Anybody have ideas?? I wonder if it was just that the car was not moving fast enough. And the fans ( which have new relays ) didn't come on. I don't know if the engine block heater had anything to do with it. And wonder what the problem would be. Is it just the cold.??And the low speed and short distance??

I wonder if the coolant temp sensor took a dump, and the pcm freaked out. Has the car been ran since then? If so, what happened on the next trip?

Yes. This is actually quite common on GM engines across many platforms, especially newer ones like the ecotec's that actually use two ECT's (one that feeds the BCM for cluster function and the main one that feeds the PCM operational data). I think the GXP has only one, but not sure.

I think the important check here is whether or not you're getting P0128 with it. If so, that could be a stuck open T-stat.

But if everything mechanically is working properly (I.E. your cooling system) and you're getting this message, and your temp gauge isn't working... ECT sensor.

No. P0128 would command the light on because if a T-Stat is stuck open it (the engine) isn't able to warm up to get into Closed Loop operation, at least not within a specified time frame, which would be an emissions issue.

Also, check wiring to/from that sensor.

I scanned it and checked the wiring. No code and the wires seem in good condition and tight. The car started right up and ran well ( it always ran well. Just hard to start.) It baffles me why the gauge went to zero. Then I thought maybe the engine block heater had something to do with it. I guess it was just the cold weather. Lane. You still have the Impala SS, ? I only found one ECT next to number 1 spark plug. Thanks guys for the help.
