Hello, I'm new to this so please bare with me as I learn the ropes of this fantastic site. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of also. I own a 00 Bonneville ssei supercharged with just under 160K. Tues it is scheduled to go have rack n pinion & struts fixed. Along with alignment as well . Mechanic quoted me $1276.28 for repairs. Everyone keeps telling me this seems awfully high priced. I've done some quotes online and I think it's average for my area. What do u all think? I I've in southwest Iowa if that helps. Thank you I appreciate any input.

Just going based on what you've posted, I'm "presuming" that when you say "fixing" you mean replacing.

As such, I just went and priced out AC Delco parts at RockAuto. Could you get others cheaper, yes. Could you get more expensive, yes. But just to keep it GM;

Struts = $62 each. x 2 = $124
Strut mount (you're gonna most likely want to replace these) = $51/each. x2 = $102
Rack and pinion = $238

So just in parts alone, you're around $500. Give or take a little dependent on parts used, or other ancillary parts I'm not factoring in.

Then there is labor. There is R&R the struts, ans then swapping the springs over to the new struts. Then there is the rack itself, which has a bit of labor too. Figure labor rates could hover between $80/hr - $125/hr as a safe ballpark. I would figure at least 3 hours for a shop. Maybe upwords of 5 if stuff doesn't go right. After all, it is an ~18 year old car...

So you're looking at $240 (3 x $80) - $375 (3 x $125) based on that hourly window for a 3 hour job. $400 (5 x $80) - $625 (5 x 125) for a 5 hour job.

So low side, 3 hours @ $80/hr is $240 for labor, plus $500 in parts, you're at $740. On the high side, 5 hours @ $125/hr is $625 for labor, plus $500 for parts, you're at $1,125.

These aren't numbers set in stone, just trying to do a back side of a napkin rough calc. He's probably not buying his parts from Rock Auto. Most likely Napa or elsewhere, which is more expensive driving up the parts side of the equation. But I doubt he's charging that many hours of labor at $125. So there is some play.

Not to mention you are going to be throwing in a front end alignment most likely due to the strut replacement...that's an additional $60....I agree that the estimate for a good shop is reasonable. Rack and pinions aren't exactly the easiest thing to do, and strut bolts can be stubborn.

However, you could easily have the same work done by a cheaper mechanic and likely not have much for problems. A home mechanic with the right set up can tackle this job and ship you off to get an alignment done cheaper, but he doesn't come with much of a warranty on his work. Part of the cost is peace of mind.
