All of my research is telling me that just changing the TCC when you only have the one code, that being P0741, will not fix the problem. If the car didn't have 215000km on it, I might risk it and try it anyway, but it just seems like too much of a risk to do all that work, and then have to drop the subframe anyway...

Now comes the decision on whether to pay a professional $3k+ to do the work, or find another vehicle and start parting it out...

Got a quote today, to replace the transmission with a rebuilt from the dealer. 3 years or 160000km warranty, for $3500 Canadian installed, parts and labour. Very tempting but still a lot of money to put into a 14 year old car... Having said that, here is a list of things that I have already done to the car in the last 24 months.

Stud kit with new head gaskets
New water pump and thermostat
All new brakes
New rear shocks
New winter tires with rims
New front wheel bearings
Repaired heated seats
New aftermarket headlights
New HID fog lights
New stepper motors in the gauges
Repaired sunroof drains
New outer tie rods
Recent alignment
New radiator
New power steering hoses
All new stereo speakers

My heart doesn't want to give up my Bonneville, but common sense tells me to stop spending money on it...

So.... I decided to go ahead with the transmission repair at the dealer. They swapped out my transmission with a GM rebuilt. While I paid a bit more than I wanted to, I now have a 36 month 160000KM transmission warranty, that is transferable should I decide to sell the car. I dropped the car off at the dealer last Thurs, and picked it up today. Seems to be running good again. :)

Glad to hear that. You'd have paid that much for a decent car that might have the same/similar repair bills down the road. You've got a solid car, and a warranty to back it up now. I wish I had bit the bullet and fixed two of my past vehicles instead of giving up on them because the cost at the time seemed to be too high. In hindsight, I would have kept vehicles I loved and trusted, and would have saved a lot of money.

Happy motoring!

You folks are not going to believe this....

The car drove just fine for about 3 days, and the check engine light is back on with the same P0741 code.... Took it back to the GM dealer, they have checked everything over, and determined that the new GM rebuilt transmission is faulty!

They have given me a loner car to use until another transmission arrives, and it is swapped out... again! This time at N/C.

Thank goodness for warranties!

I have the car back from the dealer for the second time, and all seems good. I have put 600km on it, and it is running and driving beautifully again. :)
