I have a question on what AC oil filter number I should use on my 2000SLE & 2001SLE.
I have read different things on the internet and still do not understand.
Should I use the PF47 or the PF47E?
In the past I have used the FRAM PH3387A and have had no issues.
Is the FRAM filter really that bad?
I have read various comments on how bad the FRAM filters are but have not had any problems.
The reason I am asking is that my buddy said I should use the AC brand filter on my GM cars.
Right now I have 256K on my 2000 and 147K on my 2001 and have been using FRAM forever.
I do change oil & filter every 3K-4K miles.
I have been using Mobil Oil for about 48 years with no problems.
I use the standard Mobil 10W30.
Thank you.

Either PF47 or PF47E are fine. The suffix of "E" is the econo version but they're both direct fits

You can swap the ACDelco PF52 for an extra half quart of capacity. That way you don't have to measure out to 4.5 quarts, just dump the whole 5 quart jug in.

"E" does not mean economy. The newer ones have a redesigned core. The E simply notes that it was shipped in individual boxes, vs. "F" which I believe is in bulk (say if you get them from dealership parts department. Sometimes we'd just get the common ones like 47's, 52's, 46's, 48's, in bulk since we went through them so quickly).

you can also use a mobil-1 M201 (oversized like the PF52 is) on it...that's what I use, with full syn 10-30, but I change via the oil life monitor.

Why spend more for a filter that's just going to end up being recycled in a few months/miles? GM skimps on a lot of things, but usually their lubrication systems aren't one of them. AC Delco filters work perfectly fine, especially in this application. This isn't a race car. It's a farm tractor engine that you could pour wesson oil into and filter with a piece of cheesecloth and it'd run 300k with no issues.

To answer your specific question regarding the FRAM filters; They use internal components that are less durable than other filter brands such as AC Delco, Mobil-1, K&N, etc. I never had a Fram filter fail on me when I used to use them, but I have seen some horror stories online. I switched to using Mobil-1 (M1101) filters years ago just for personal peace of mind, but as mentioned above AC Delcos are fine and you can get the extended version that increases your capacity if you'd prefer.

Been running the PF52 for years now. They're easy to find too. Just about any store will carry them, even Walmart. I figure the extra size is also good for longer intervals. I run synthetic and do 7500 mile intervals.

A couple random notes for this thread.

The 2000, 4.3l Chevy S10 is the "larger size" 3.8L filter. Simply ask for a 2000 S10 filter with a 4.3L engine and you will have a perfect fit for the larger capacity 3.8L oil filter, without needing to remember filter part numbers.

Fram was bought out by Champion, the company that was making K&N and Mobile 1 filters. Champion was making those filters in the USA. After the buyout, K&N contracted their filter manufacturing to a Chinese and Korean firm, they are no longer the high quality internals they once were.

The real good news, is that Fram's best filter is actually a Champion filter. It is sold at Wal-mart and at a very good price. "fram ultra synthetic oil filter" is the best filter on the market in many peoples reviews, and very cost competitive. AutoZone does not carry the fram ultra synthetic oil filter, as they don't want to compete with Walmart. Instead they sell the pre-champion takeover Fram filters at the same or higher price than walmart sells the fram ultra synthetic oil filter.

fram ultra synthetic oil filter are the only filters I buy. I get them at wal-mart, awesome price, and have full confidence I am using the best filter money can buy, but I am not paying a lot. Prior to the fram ultra synthetic oil filter, I was not considering the purchase of Fram oil filters, because of the poor reviews.
