Well, on my way to GM yesterday (Live in Metro Detroit), I heard a noise "in front of me" actually thinking it was the guy in front of me who had a high performance exhaust - It was not.

Coming from the front drivers side, the noise increases with car speed. It sounds like a "growling" or "light grinding".

My first thought was wheel bearing. I replaced both front bearings 2500 miles ago, however I used China bearings due to the fact that I'm broke.

Other than a premature bearing failure, any ideas?

In a perfect world, I would pull the wheel, however it's 0 degrees out and would prefer to have a plan before attack.

Thanks.

YOU CAN get the wheel off the ground and check for play with hands at 12 and 6 o' clock - there should be no play with you rocking with good force.
you look under the front end to see if anything is messed up while its off the ground

I've heard of the chinese bearings lasting about 3 oil changes when I was doing research, so it's very possible it's the bearing if the preload wasn't set properly, or the bearings are just poorly made. One way to determine if it's the bearing without doing anything TO the car, is to drive it, when you hear the noise, bear to the left and then to the right and see if the noise gets noisier or quieter while putting a load on the bearing. The tire getting the load put on it should make more noise and the tire with the lighter load should make less noise.

I wouldn't be surprised if that bearing already went. Only one way to know for sure.
